I'm considering a layover in Laughlin prior to the trip putting me at camp early, potentially, depending on severity of hangover :hmm: Send me some GPS details when you get back. (Just in case)

600 miles today, at mile 0.0 looking at the Arizona side of the river.....we are going to need big snorkels and LFD's (Landcruiser Flotation Devices) if anyone is contemplating a crossing.

Looking towards Laughlin.

I drove a few miles of dirt and snaked up to old Route 66 just to see what was there.

Well, looks like you have two weeks to get a ferry built!

River currents prove ideal for rescue training

A Las Vegas firefighter clings to a life line as he fights through an eddy in the Colorado River during the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue’s Tactical Rescue Academy’s swift-water training exercises off the shore of Big Bend State Recreation Area south of Laughlin last week. The rescue unit used the fast-moving river channel to simulate conditions of monsoon flooding in urban Las Vegas.

So this is our approximate group size. We were 12 trucks in Death Valley and possibly 16 trucks this time. With a group this large we will need to travel in two groups and separate by 1/4 mile while traveling to keep choking dust down but we will still be spread out. When camping we may be forced to camp in two groups across the road from each other depending on what we find.

The pot luck idea could be whatever we want, I'm thinking we should all be on our own for breakfast and lunch, we could do one potluck dinner or a dinner every night. We already have a Mexican dinner planned for one night I'm thinking Saturday.

I need to firm up the list and make a few more calls about camping the first night. We will post our first night location so that people joining up late Friday night or early Saturday morning can catch up with the group. The drive will take approximately 4+ hours to get to the starting off point so plan on fuel stops. I'm proposing going through Kingman and down to Laughlin, gas in Needles ,CA was $4.19 per gallon as compared to $2.29 in Laughlin.

More to come

For head count, a friend of mine may be coming along.

I am out.

spoke with the NPS this morning and I'm submitting a permit request based on the size of our group, anything over 7 trucks. They need a rough guess and I've submitted 16 trucks and 20 people. If it goes up or down this didn't seem to be a great concern. I sent in the application this morning.

Dannette from the Park service also provided some tracks for the area and recommended a few camp sites based on our size. I'm reviewing the locales on google earth and hoping for something with a little scenery. Sites are first come so we might not end up where I said in the application.

It is because of the size of your group you need to use a campground?

No the size of the group requires a special permit. We have to list where we would camp and based on our size the NPS is recommending some sites for us to list.

I have already paid the online fee ($69.00) and am hoping they don't also ask for the extra processing fee. An additional $216.00. Fingers crossed

My time off Friday was finally approved today, so won't need to play catch-up. :steer:

Willing to pitch in on any permit fees that accrue. Thanks for being so thorough in your planning, research, and pre-running, @Saddletramp!

Thanks everyone, we will see where this goes. I have a permit number and have paid, next is the physical ink on documents and then stamped and sent back to me. The NPS employee has been very helpful and thankfully provided some great sites we probably would have skipped.

You mentioned potluck meals for dinner, I could bring pulled pork for one night, either serve with buns for a sandwich or topped on a baked potato. This would go well with Ron's beans he made for the Pyeatt draw trip :D hint, hint... @Dimples

Well that makes my shopping list easy

Just to make sure, will we need to cross that raging river? I do not have a snorkel......but I can swim.

Definitely be prepared to swim/push your truck across. We will "caulk the wagons and float it"! Totally doable.

Oh wait, I think that's a different game.
