Just realized this thread doesn't have any pics of the install...

More over here:

This looks really good. Do you mind posting the approximate total cost for this? Purchase price for all components, shipping, paint, etc.

Looks like you still have the wiper/washer and defrost all still operational, correct?
When you get a chance, can you shoot some pic's of the interior?
I'd like to see how the storage panels came out and what you're referring to about not staying shut.

Yeah. I will dig it all up. Far and away the largest cost was shipping - if we could load a full container there would be a potential savings.

Yep! Everything bolts on from the GX and functions…with the exception of the interior panels. You need to use the supplied panels, the OEM GX ones looks like they’ll fit - but they don’t. 🤦‍♂️

I don’t want it to sound like it’s bad, there are slight fitment gaps here and there. My biggest pain is on the tool/storage ‘covers’ - the turn-to-lock toggles are kinda crummy. I bet swapping to the OEM ones would be a good upgrade - but my interior is Ecru and the rear panels are black.

Oh, which leads me to another “FYI”. The interior panels for the Prado only come in black or tan. Not two toned like some of our vehicles. You could always paint to match - but I’ve been fine with black on the Ecru.

Bottom line, I am 98% happy with the conversion. Everything bolted on and functions like it should. Really, there were no surprises or panic attacks during the install and any downside listed is far, far, far outweighed by the benefits.

Why not use your old doors interior panels?

😉

To give a little additional context - the main reason they don't fit is due to the OEM door having the flip open window and this one being fixed. The mounting locations and overall dimensions are just... different.

Do you think a heat gun on your interior molding may help to "persuade" to fit a little better?

Maybe. It never really bothered me enough to do anything about it if that tells you about how "bad" it is. 🤷‍♂️

I guess one could also just buy the real prado parts since they are smaller and can ship easier.
Exactly. If it bothered you enough to spend $500 - to each their own. BUT, you’re still limited to black or tan (not two tone) because, Toyota.

I'll be happy to reinvent the wheel. But I'd rather stand on the shoulders of giants... If you get my drift.
If... Mind you if I'm catching your drift... Are you thinking about making a rear hatch mounted spare or if there is someone in the northern hemisphere that makes one?
If so, this was tossed about some time ago and the general consensus is that the non-Prado, Lexus rear doors of North America are not strong enough for a bolt on spare carrier to the actual door. And I think I recall there might be a vendor out there that makes one.
Albeit, saying that doesn't mean it can't be done without some proper engineering, but our "Lexus" model rear doors don't have the internal reinforcements to hold a spare (much less a 35") from all the oscillating and bouncing from thousands of miles of washboard, driveways, bumpy roads, potholes, etc. and not tear the sheet metal clean off the rear door.

I by no means mean to be snarky, but maybe instead of standing on the shoulders of giants, you came up with a design that worked well with our North American rear doors and you became the giant others stand upon!
Just a thought... :hmm:

Truly wish you the best on this adventure!

Haha, I would get a bumper based tire carrier before I use the stock door. But I like the idea of the Prado door replacement. I grew up with those.

So if I do something door mounted it would be a replacement door and would be 33" max.

How is the door mounted wheel structurally done on the prado door? Is there additional re-enforcement inside the door to hold on or is it similar to the JW mount which ties the inside to the sheet metal? I dont see much info in the discussion thread on these? Would really help on, if this is actually a worthy upgrade.

My only input would be if you go with the JW mount, stay with a stock wheel/tire size and don't do washboard roads.

looks great!!!

the only thing that turns me off is the fixed glass. I use mine ALL the time. Guess i could stop doing that though and i'd survive haha
