My 99 LC has had a power steering leak for a couple of months. Not bad but recently I have noticed that it is getting worse, to the point of putting fluid in it every other day. I’ve been looking through the posts here and saw that possibly I can use a stop leak additive and that might help. I am in the process of cleaning the engine bay and noticed that there is a small hose that is not connected. I’m assuming that it is the ps pump that this hose goes to. I took a couple of pictures and maybe one of you more knowledgeable guys can verify that for me. Once I have it cleaned up hopefully I can find the leak and go from there. I am hoping that it is a hose as opposed to the whole steering rack being replaced as I don’t have the funds for that job.

That black nut in the third pic is a banjo bolt. Feeds the fluid into the pump. There should be two crush washers that go on either side of that banjo fitting. I can’t tell from the picture if the are there. Or maybe if they there then they were old but not replaced during maintenance.

I just looked at mine. If I stand in front of my headlight and look down onto the bolt, I can see my crush washer. I need a flashlight though.

This might be a better picture. Looks like a washer underneath. Can’t tell if it’s more than one though.

Are you talking about the larger one or the smaller one at about 11 o’clock in this picture. The one to the left has a double fitting that has two small hoses that attach to it. In this picture it shows one of the hoses disconnected. I saw that one earlier and put it back on. I had radiator and alternator installed a few days ago. I don’t remember it being like that before I had it in the shop.

Thread 'Steering Flush & Cleaning'

Cleaning power steering reservoir and flushing it's fluid. Keeps Vane pump and rack & pinion in top condition.

These step will help you get, a better idea on how to.
  1. Power wash reservoir & hoses using a degreaser, before starting service. Makes for cleaner job. Repeat, once all done with servicing/flushing.
  2. Release hose clamps from hoses of reservoir, sliding them down the hoses a few inches. Do not remove hose yet, just insure they turn freely on reservoir nipples.
  3. Pull reservoir out of holder. You'll need to release/bend clip outward, on outside of holding bracket...

As mentioned early I clamp power steering reservoir hoses that appeared to be leaky. This sometimes stop leaky hoses for years. It's import to work top down stopping leaks. Often time a shop will say you've a leaky rack when that's not the case, it's just run down from above.

Sometimes these hoses are shot and clamping is a band-aid to slow leaks. This is the case here, these hoses are shot, the return line being the worst. Toyota requires us to buy the whole HP & return line set-up at ~$500 to replace the return line, in 98-02. They do sell return line separately for the 03-07. Note: The...
