Powder Coated Aisin Lockout Hub Faces

So someone simply bought a set of hubs and had them shipped straight to me. I was just going to do the faces, but nah--I'm too nice of a guy to let them go like that.

Here's what came in the mail... hubs 1.webp

And here's what some light soaking and scrubbing in the solvent tank did...

Here's the little ball that you don't want to lose. When you separate the dial from the ring the ball often falls out, flies out due to the spring, or gets caught in the grease and then lost in the solvent tank. But here's where it is...

And here's the follower pawl installed correctly. More pictures of this can never hurt. :)

Here's a set of two complete faces getting ready for media blasting...

Here's the old O-rings removed from the ones I've done so far (and why I have to keep ordering more O-rings)

And the back of the hub itself.

After cleaning all the parts thouroughly, they got greased and reassembled.

At the same time the dials and rings were getting powder coated.

Unfortunately, the batteries on the camera died, so I have no pics of that. :flipoff2:

Hope this whets your appetite! The owner of these should have his whole thing in the mail tomorrow afternoon if I play my cards right.

NOTE--my offer here is generally to simply rebuild the hub faces. In this case, I just couldn't stand the thought of sending someone these super nasty grease covered hubs with shiny new faces. He didn't ask for me to do any of the cleaning and whatnot, I just did it because it seemed like a good thing to do.

Does that mean that my set is coming up soon?

You are definitely a professional at this....

They are mine

I just wanted to say that the latest works of art shown here are my hubs. Dan is an outstanding guy to work with, a guy who really takes what he does seriously. Dan, I'm on travel and just saw this last night, I'm speechless about how good these look. I pm'd you re:additional costs for all of the work you put in above and beyond the call. Send me a figure, I trust you, you've more than earned it.:clap::clap:

Closer. :) Closer by one set as long as I don't get stuck working on the faux lux tomorrow morning instead of finishing up a couple more sets of hub faces. :)

Professional? Not yet, just doing what I can. Once Gene's 35LV is up and running then I'll probably just keep doing these, but making the money to fund my 45 project (and general career backup plan :) ) But hey, I just submitted to the company my request to take the "time off without pay" they are offering us instead of furloughing, so I might just get to have "Land Cruiser Party 2008!!!" in July. :)

FWIW, I just picked up 20 more O-rings, so as soon as I'm done with dinner I'll be back up in the shop. Hopefully get at least two more ready to ship tomorrow.

Stephen: I'll call this weekend. When I'm at work I generally have time to talk. :D

So here's what's in the box you'll be getting...

And here's what they look like close up. I don't have any more plated bolts, so I had to settle with cleaning these up and shooting them with a light coat of Zinc-It. Nothing fancy, basically just a coat of primer on the bolt heads.

And after all that I did a little bit on the next set, but I also had to treat myself to a cerveza. A good one.
hubs 6.webp

I'm not sure if I'll get any more sets ready to go out tomorrow, as I have to go back on the road for work tomorrow, but I'm going to try.

Dan,

Just wondering if the black nail-polish is from your Five Iron Frenzy (FIF) days???

Oh, Canada! :D:D

No. I was trying to go goth, but chickened out after only doing half of the nail. Either that or I smashed it really good while scoring a power steering box at the junkyard. I forget which. Whichever one hurts more. :)

The mohawk is from the FIF days (but do they ever really end, I know they broke up in 2003, but they still rock my stereo!). Except now that I'm a professional, I call it a "pro-hawk" when I cut it back in (not often enough, if you ask me). I'm willing to bet money that for one week I was probably the only airline captain on earth with a mohawk.
