Bret - I drove through Pittsboro last week and was wondering if it would fit the OP's criteria. Then I forgot all about posing that question here! I used to play a quick 9 at a cheap golf course near there when I would be in the area. Cedar or Lakes something. I think it was a 9 hole with 2 sets of tees each. Easy walk.

Thanks for the info, Bret and John.

I will take over my wife's Prius for a commuter when we move. Still takes time to drive, though :(

We have even considered just getting a shack in the woods with some acreage out west of Pittsboro and maintaining a small apartment near work, as well, but apartments in Morrisville/Cary aren't cheap :(

I need this place around the west side of Lake Jordan: http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3274-Alamance-Church-Rd-Julian-NC-27283/5985679_zpid/

Maybe I should just forget about public schools and plan to budget for prep schools :(

Crazy as it may seem, why places like where I work are filled to max enrollment. We have quite a few families that live in the rural areas around Durham Academy (my employer), a couple in Pittsboro, many around Jordan Lake, Cary/Apex and north into Henderson. We could cut our mortgage in half by moving out of Cary and have spent that on tuition, that old hindsight vision thing...

Hmm - - if we lived up near Duke it would be bad . . Drinking too much beer at Sam's Quik Shop, eating too many tater tot's at Dain's Place, wearing my Kansas University and KSU gear around the Duke campus.

Looks like we should budget for a cool $20K for a prep school in the area.

Both kids are both great students and very into the musical arts: singers/choir/musicals. The other option is play the lottery for DSA . .

That's DA, there are others around us that are less I'm sure. I do have to say, we get kids into some pretty impressive schools once they leave DA...

Should find out this week my fate - to stay in KC or to move to the Triangle. Coming out for work tomorrow.

I just moved here about 2 years ago. If I were going to do it over again, I would do what Ramon said and buy a place around Lake Jordan in Chatham County. I'd have been better off buying a cheaper place out there and then paying for private school. My kid's school is over crowded and get worse by the day. One thing to consider is that it is much easier to get into the good NC colleges if you live in Chattam, Durham or Orange Co vs Wake.

I know a good realtor in that area if you need one a good one for Wake co as well.

Stay through the weekend and hitch a ride to Portsmouth Island with us!

Oh crap - I just saw this. My wife would have killed me if I would have done that, though LOL.

We drove the 2004 4Runner out to Raleigh last year and then drove down the coastal hwys to Savannah where my bro-in-law lives. We haven't been north of Wilmington. We took the ferry to South Port from Fort Fisher. No beach driving, though.

We will need a "drive report" on your trip now that you mentioned it :)

Excellent advice, and we will need a realtor, so would love to get a recommendation, there.

The plan is for me to start work Dec/Jan - get an apartment near work for now - work like a dog in the new role while family is in KC - and prep for my family to come out once our house in KC sells, but no later than May. We may buy a storage container or go with PODs, etc. We need to be settled in the new school district / house before school starts next Fall.

Jamie, another thing to consider in moving here is that many of the schools are year round and the school year starts in July.

For a local realtor, I'd highly recommend Mike Wolgin http://www.mikewolgin.com he is a great guy.

We are interested in selling our GX470 and picking up another Prius.

Do we have a Raleigh-area Toyota dealer sponsor for the club?

We are about 80% likely to move at this point - negotiating relocation packages soon - verbal offers are done/accepted, awaiting written offers and relocation.

Fred Anderson Toyota on Glenwood in Raleigh is our Raleigh sponsor. However, I believe their sponsorship is restricted to parts only, it's worth a call (to the parts department) to find out.

Do you have a write-up on the 2014 Prius by chance in regards to the battery back-up and such? Started searching your threads but didn't see one....but it sounds very interesting in the tag-line

My neighbor Andy is the manager of Apex Toyota - PM and I'll give his contact info or send me your contact info and I'll have him call you. He is a nice guy. I can also give you the contact info for a good realtor (same on that GLTHFJ60 used).

Sorry - was somewhat of a joke as the Prius has the traction battery (high voltage) and the starter battery and both are regulated by alternators and computers. But seriously, we seem to take it everywhere now - truly exploring with it over our 4Runners due to gas mileage :)

I am researching the use of the Prius as a home generator for times when we are without power. It seemed to me that it would be perfect as it has a 10 gallon tank and it only runs the engine when the battery needs to be charged or the vehicle is cold. If you had to use gas for your generator, it may be a more efficient way to do it vs a always on/running 5-8Kw gas generator from Costco, etc.

Here are a couple sites that talk about this as well as the concept of using one for extended periods camping, etc.

Thanks, Johnny and Kulangot and all - - looks like the west side of the Raleigh area has two really good dealerships at least.

.....

The prius gets taken out to most places during the year, only when it snows more than a couple of inches do we steer clear of it..

Funny you mention the home generator possibility - don't want to threadjack - but I found this site a couple months back and am seriously considering it also...... thanks for the links.
