Good evening. Lately I have noticed the smell of gas coming from the 80. I replaced the OEM one with an Auto Zone VC120, it has been in there for a few years.

Looked up to see how much a replacement one is, $120 dollars. I do not remember paying that much before.

So onto my question, can I pull one of the hoses on the charcoal canister to allow the tank to vent properly and if so which one? I am assuming the hose that says to tank is the one to pull.

Have you checked if the EVAP vacuum switch is functioning properly? The FSM has some tests that are easy to follow. As I understand it, the VSV sucks the fumes from the CC into the inlet under certain conditions.

I will look that up and test things and hopefully get it figured out.

Yeah they sure have gone up in price since doing the mod. Mine usually works great until one time driving slowly in elevation in Utah and the gas was boiling. 😜😩

Did you hang onto your original? They're surprisingly easy to rebuild. A little careful work with a grinder and a scraper to get it open, then some petco charcoal and a little RTV to seal it up again.
no i was not thinking

I will just say, they are easy to rebuild. Did mine 4 years ago haven't even thought about it since then. I would imagine you could get one cheap from someone in classifieds .

@OffRoadScott
All my 80s has the LCP CC mod by drilling out the ball bearing (BB).
The hardest and time consuming part was grinding away to pop the lid off.
It's a 🍌 job....you should have no problem doing it.

If I could find a OEM one for a decent price I would resort back to OEM.

FWIW I have found the need to replace my charcoal since I did my final <BB> mod. The why - the CC is vented to outside via a bottom vent on the can. The charcoal in the can absorbs gas fumes from the tank and gas odor will first become noticable when its hot out. Time to replace your charcoal inside and enjoy the next several years fume free.

how would I be able to tell whether what I'm smelling in my cabin is exhaust or charcoal.. my car smells like it's running quite rich at idle, but my mechanic says it seems fine to him on the wideband sensor, and said he would need to use a gas analyzer to investigate further.

My catch can only has 155,000kms mileage, and this car is dual fuel with LPG and ran predominantly on LPG for the better part of the last 80,000kms, so wouldnt have had much fuel vapour either. I'm less inclined to believe it's the catch can, but worth asking.

Also, I don't get a really long loud wooosh when opening the cap, but I do get a woosh of about 2 seconds (no fuel spitting).

Woosh indicates a clog, LCP rebuild fixes that. If it smells I would change the charcoal with the BB mod.

Interesting! In the manual, there seems to be a procedure where you can check/test and clean it? Worth a try I guess?

Do you have a link to the LCP rebuild with BB mod? Is it this one? Charcoal canister rebuild - 80 Series - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/charcoal-canister-rebuild-80-series.1140494/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Edit: I found it! I put an end to my Charcoal Canister problems for good! - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/i-put-an-end-to-my-charcoal-canister-problems-for-good.958684/

If your mechanic doesnt own an LC, get a new mechanic....😉...JK

Like folks said, from our experience, any "swosh" sounding upon opening the gas cap is a sign of pressure in he tank caused by the clogged CC.
Either :

Get a VC120 and may need to replace it within a year or 2. Or

Modify the CC per LCP i structure and should last you another 100k or untill when the charcoal itself needing replacing again.

he's actually an excellent mechanic, but none are perfect right. He was the only one who found and sorted out some really tricky gremlins. He's older and semi retired, but has diagnostic equipment and software that can actually read pre obd2 vehicles, and he was the only one I could find that suggested and could do a valve clearance adjustment (crazy, I know). I was a little disappointed now that I know he's likely overgreased my slip joints. I had done the UJs myself, but explained to him I was nervous doing the slips incase I overgreased them... when I picked it up, I voiced this concern again, and he said, "you just pump them full until you see grease weep at the seal".. so they've almost certainly been overgreased now. I'm not sure what to do about that, but will chat to the guys at the transmission place when they drop the pan and do a full ATF service on Monday. Maybe there's a way they can remove some of the grease while it's up on the hoist.

I try and do most things myself within my capability, but also the challenge is that I'm not currently living in a house, so working on the cruiser in apartment carparks is VERY challenging. Poor lighting, nosey neighbours and a pesky strata. I usually drive 45mins to a relatives place and work on it there, but they've moved now, so that's no longer an option either. We've been looking at buying a house for 2 years, the market in Australia is horrdendous.. hopefully we'll get something soon, with my own garage, so I can attempt most of these tasks, myself.

I think it's crazy, given the mileage on this vehicle and lack of use with the fuel system that my CC is clogged, but I'm going to buy a second hand one, cut it open and do the refresh. I'd rather do that then butcher my own at this point in time, just incase it doesnt change anything.

I stuck my head in the engine bay last night after a 30min drive and the smell is definitely coming from the tailpipe, not the engine bay.
