Possible clogged charcoal canister

where were you smelling the fuel though? engine bay or back of vehicle/exhaust?

yes, same, but when I get closer, I'm not getting the smell from the front, it's definitely from the back and smells like it's running rich.

I also have the ever so slightest little variation in my rpm at idle. Tiny, but there.. idle isn't 100% smooth, it's like 95% smooth. I'd almost bet there's either a slightly dribbly injector or the spray patterns on most of them aren't great and this is causing a bit of unburnt fuel to come out the back.

I just picked up a genuine charcoal cannister off a wrecked 96 model with 300,000kms. The plan is to do the LCP rebuild and BB mod to this one, then install and see if the whoosh goes away and the rich smell.

The woosh will definitely go away once you do the LCP mod but the rich smell of gas might not be cured if the VSV for the charcoal canister is failed. I did the LCP mod about 3 years back and it has been and still is doing its thing but a few weeks back i started smelling gas again and when i did the FSM tests on the VSV it failed. A new VSV ($107) and problem solved.
