Well, yes and no.

Check valves are only a first line of defense and may not ultimately stop a flashback.

If your oxygen cylinder is low or empty, reverse flow of gas may occur. The fuel gas, being at a higher pressure, can travel up the oxygen line and mix with gas in the hose, regulator and cylinder.

If you light the torch without purging the lines, a burn back may occur with explosions in the hose, regulator, or cylinder.

The same thing can happen with high oxygen pressure and low fuel gas pressure if a backfire occurs, which is usually caused by holding the cutting torch too close to your work. This causes gas starvation of the cutting flame and results in the flame being sucked into the torch head. Usually you will hear a popping sound that turns to a whistle when this happens.

I’ve overheated straight body torches cutting the centers out of drilling bits. (You don’t need or want the “jets” that come in a mud bit for reverse circulation, so you have to cut the 2-3” thick center of the body out. The “insides” if you will.) The only way in is straight down the throat. It’s hot work, especially in the summer in So Nevada.

An overheated touch will also pop like a MFer because you’re getting ignition in the mixing chamber.

When a backfire takes place in a mixing chamber, unless you shut off the oxygen valve, the flame burning in the torch head may ignite gases in the hoses and result in a flashback. A flashback is an explosion that progresses through the torch, hoses, regulators, and into the cylinders. The consequences can range from a burst hose to a violent explosion of the regulator and cylinders.

This is the reason we are taught to purge the torch and hoses before igniting the torch, and we only ignite the torch on acetylene, never oxygen and acetylene. (Keep the pressure in the acetylene line below 15psi, too.)

Reverse Flow check valves: help to prevent the reverse flow of gases from traveling past the check valve, but you don’t need reverse flow to support flame prolongation.

Flashback arrestors prevent a flame from traveling past the flashback arrestor in the event of a flashback.

The flashback arrestors weren’t popular back in the day because you couldn’t run a big tip with them (they restrict flow in the “forward” direction.)

They make “high-volume” variants these days, so that excuse is gone.
EXACTLY. If properly taught! Believe we both been using the torch for years. Good info for all 🤔😉.

Driving between Redding, CA and Eureka, CA today on route 299 saw two FJ55’s near Big Flats on the right hand side near the road on a small hill. Couldn’t snap a picture while driving. Anyone seen the pigs before? I bet Jason at @TRAIL TAILOR has seen them?

This picture is for @bobm who said I should post more pictures of my pig. Others may have seen this on my Instagram posts (dtc227)
