Check out the pics in the link I posted above, post #5 has a good comparison between stock, HID kit in depo housings and properly retro fit, the iso was set really high so they are a bit dark but you will get the jist

Hmmm yeah I do see what you mean in thoes pictures. Except on my FJ the light is not that scattered when I put it on a wall like that. IDK  Maybe they made some improvements on headlamps over the last 10 years????

The scattered pics are of brand new 5000k kit bulbs in brand new Depo housings, but results do vary, nonetheless, comparatively not as focused as they should be to be safe

Meh.....I guess ill take my chances. I like them. Again I use to get flashed in my FJ with the OEM setup sometimes. So getting flashed once or twice a month seems negligible to me.

Hay,
THIS IS NOT HID THREAD

I opened this thread to give mudders inexpensive HIR solution.
and my opinion about it compare to other HIR I had.

PLEASE KEEP HID discussions to a minimum and within the spirit of this thread

Many thanks

Good post Rami, I looked at the link and it mentioned that it's not to be used in road going applications without a bulb shield etc. I have a 95 FJ80, does it have a bulb shield? What is your experience on road with oncoming traffic? I am looking to do low beams only. Thanks

There out there.. suvlights.com Philips 9011 (HIR1) bulb can replace the 9005 and HB3 new 3rd Generation longer

The Toshiba 9011 work fine for me and I have not seen 9011 Phillips.

I forgot to give you my perceptive on HID. I had HID on:
BMW 330i
Volvo 70R
BMW M5

So I had three cars with HID and I tell you the Phillps are no HID but in the LX450 it is excellent and there is no point going to HID given the simple solution the 9012 Phillips provide.

9011 and 9012.

Which is high and which is low? Do these require and mods like the John Dear or just plug and play?

See the link, it gives the info on the mods required. I have had my new bulbs for three days, time to get them in. I will post an update.
I think the 9011 is low and 9012 is high. I will know when I pull out the old bulbs.

How to Modify HIR bulb bases

? for 9012 low beam users

On the Candlepower site it says that the 9012s are not for road going use without a bulb shield. Sooo, help a headlight newb out. I have a 95, does it have a bulb shield? No flame for dumb a** ? please, just don't know. Or, are you guys running them without blinding oncoming traffic/getting tickets? I really hate stock low beams but don't have a lot of cash at the moment, 30 bucks each sounds great. Thanks in advance.

I replaced my 9005/9006's with Toshiba 9011's in all four holes. Obviously the 9011's are for high beam only and do require slight modification of the electrical socket to fit the low beam plug. I haven't been flashed with them yet though. And man they're some bright low beams.

This gives you 2500 lumens versus 1875 lumens on the low beams. That's supposedly more than the new Philips 9012 but I haven't seen any beamshot comparison. All I know is I have the best headlamps I've ever driven with. My 100 watt H3 off-road lamps don't even add much to the high beams now. I wish my other vehicles used these bulbs. I'm spoiled now.

I posted some info about the bulb shield in this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/359105-john-deere-hir-not-hid.html

I'm not knocking the HIRs (I have them in both high and low beams) but there definitely is an increase in glare from the low beams (I notice it a lot on street signs and other reflective surfaces).

From what I have read this is due to the bulb shield design in the low beam sockets. Technically we should not be using the HIR bulbs in the low beam socket due to the construction of the socket and the type of bulb shield Toyota put in the low beam housings. If you use a mirror to peek into the low beam socket while the bulb is out you will see that the light output of the low beam bulb is controlled/directed by a ring-type bulb shield, and that there is nothing obstructing light from going straight out the front of the headlight.

A regular 9006 bulb has a a blacked out end (blacktop), so the light is properly controlled and directed by the reflector. But when you put the 9012 HIR bulbs in, there is no blacktop and a lot of light escapes out the front of the ring-type shield, causing the glare. This is probably also one of the reasons the HIR 9012 bulbs are such a drastic increase when you look at them in the truck, since the light can travel directly out of the lens, instead of being directed by the reflector.

With all that said, the only trouble I have ever had is the increase in glare from street signs and such. I have never been flashed when my low beams were on either. I will continue to use my HIRs, but I figured I would share this info anyway.

for what ever reason the Phillips have less glare. Maybe because the wide angle is a bit closer to the road. Specifically:
Coming into my street there is a stop sign about 100 meters away. With the Toshiba HIR that stop sign was glaring straight back at me, with the Phillips I no longer get the glare right back at me. The light will be on the stop sign post, but not as high as the reflective part of the stop sign.

Sorry, very un scientific but never the less practical observation.

All very good information, is very much appreciated. Looks like I will be ordering a couple of low beams in the next week or so.

Another great idea, and this one doesn't even drain the wallet that much, thanks Rami

Ditto what he said. ^^

9011's all the way around for a couple years now, and I never get flashed.

I can re-affirm, driving home from deer hunting last night, there's no better $100 mod for an 80 than this. One thing to think about though is the longevity may not be as great as a 9012 since your lows are on most of the time as opposed to highs not usually as much. Well worth it to me. You can't believe how far out you see deer eyes. :)
