I'm confused are you going to be running the michelins you got on a different wheel and a set of IROK radials?

Hopefully you get the 6 speed, but what project doesnt have obstacles, that wouldnt be any fun if it was too easy.

Yes. The Michelins are fantastic tires, but like all tires, they do have a significant compromise, and that is ice and snow, in which , they just don't work. The Irok's, on the other hand, rock the River Shiver.

So, my thought is 2 sets of tires. In fact, maybe even exactly the same 2 sets of tires between Zippopot... er... the Expo truck and Ziplock. Michelins on the Expo for Summer, Irok's on Ziplock for rock crawling, Irok's on the Expo truck for winter, the Michelin's and Ziplock go into hibernation for the winter.

But when the SHTF and the Zombies come to life, I'll be rollin' on XL's, baby.

So after last nights festivities does this thing officially have a name?

frankenzip?

Zipborg?

El Zipper-roono?

Or???

Transmission Option 3

My friendly engine vendor suggested the G56 transmission. It is the direct competitor to the ZF S6. Daimler built, all aluminum, 6 speed manual. Dual PTO's. Gear ratios are basically the same.

It has a 29 Spline Output that has been mated to an Atlas case.

It has some reliability issues when behind high HP diesels. This wont' be a concern for me.

This might allow me to use a Cummins factory flywheel housing adapter that has the boss for flywheel driven air... kind of like on the one pictured below.

I've only ever driven one briefly on a test drive. It seemed pretty nice.

My question is for those who've driven G56's and my Option 2 Tranny, the ZF S5... Does the G56 fill you with the same shifting joy and confidence as the ZF S5, or is it more mind-numbingly NV4500/5600 like.

OK, enough debate already. The ZF S5 is the one. I think I even found one for sale on Kijiji in Lethbridge.

Some S5 Stats for the record. Shamelessly stolen from ford-trucks.com

Step 2

Step 2 of my project plan began today. Stripping the 79 Cab.

The Cab is not great... it is a former mine truck cab, after all. Driver's side floor pan was rusted through, and repaired with a sheet of 1/4" thick steel! New floor pan is definitely needed. Lot of surface rust underneath. Dash was pretty beat up. Sitting outside for several years without a windshield didn't do any favours for it either.
But... it's the only 79 cab I have, so it's what I have to work with.
In an afternoon, I got the front clip off, and the dash removed. Headliner and trim remains. I will plan to lift it off the frame on Friday, the 27th.

Clutch is not boost-assisted, but it does have a cantilever assist that actually holds the pedal down to the floor with no back pressure from the clutch. That seems nice.

Corrosion in the driver's footwell, and some other dings and abrasions that will need to be addressed. Far from perfect, but I've seen people restore much worse. Although... this isn't really a restoration project...

Looking good Peter! interesting piece behind the seats, was that for push button parking brake?

The gack behind the seats looked like a fire supression system. Big push buttons on the dash were for brakes. Big Murphy gauges. All very industrial. Fairly well done. The truck was definately not retired because the aftermarket add-ons failed, that's for sure.

Subscribed. A radial winter tire is a wise choice. :)
