Overwhelmed by awnings

I have used a oz tent foxwing/batwing for years. Have all the side walls and use it regularly. One of my best purchases. I would like to have a self supporting one but not for rain as with the pole supported version I can tilt the roof for better run off.

Well, I went with Moon. Mounts with magnets on either side or over the tailgate. Packs up small, 8 pounds. No wind noise driving! 300 bones. 7x9 feet mounts on any side. Bought the Rpod mounts too. Kinda windy in Utah. I’m not emotionally or fiscally invested. Might live in mini van 🤣. Suction cups and hooks, it’ll mount to a wall or a fence. well made saving up for the alu-cab, but she needs suspension up grades and new shoes.

You guys are out of my league. Here’s my seven dollar tarp, homemade bungees, and a couple of old tent poles.

You're not alone. Not the best pic, but at the beach we use my wifes dirt cheap lightweight nylon awning draped over the roof and shut the rear windows over the cloth to hold it. 2 collapsible poles and 2 pieces 550cord to anchor to something we bury in the sand. In rainy camping we combine a polytarp with a $39 8'X8' collapsible awning. We shift the tarp to one side to make a wind break for cool weather surf fishing.

Got an Overland Pros Wraptor 4K and Eezi Awn Swift on one of my 80’s.

Currently trying to figure out how to mount either of these awnings to my other 80 without going to a full roof rack.

Went with an OVS 270 LT on the LX.

I recently saw a Cruiser with these brackets on both sides their roof rack. Turns out Ironman4x4 makes an awning that fits on these posts for quick disconnect and on this guy's truck, swappable to either side. They use a clevis pin to lock them in place. I think the awning can also be removed while still deployed and tarp poles used in place so that you can drive away while the awning is still set up. It's a pretty clever design. I have a standard 2500 ARB and I don't like keeping it on the truck every day of the year. It's a 15 minute job installing it every time we go on a trip. This looks like a 30 second install.

Actually looks like the kit could be used on any aluminum tracked awning, or at least made to with a little creativity.

I thought about doing just that with my Ostrich Wing. Wouldn’t be that hard. Great. Another project.

We deployed our ARB awning and the very recently acquired annex room at our last outing. It was pretty neat to have a changing room and a shady place to enjoy a beverage.

i barely get to use my awning where i live, plenty of trees! I take it back, it was very useful on heavy downpours. But trips out west in the desert, it's clearly one of the important additions i have on the rig.

It's a rhino batwing. Not the strongest ones but i like that it is not too heavy. I just take my time setting it up one leg at a time. I have the lines ready on each leg, and simply attach it to the bumper/sliders to make sure it doesn't get blown off/break the hinges on a slight breeze. It's definitely a weak point (as designed) and i already broke two hinges on my second time deploying it so lesson learned. Design is good, execution can be better.

The cover zip has loosened up ever since it got covered by mud. Not happy with it. Still i have no plans replacing it until the whole thing completely breaks.

Love our Ironman awning! Having the fridge and drawers in the rear of the 100 series I was very tempted by the 270s since I’m back there constantly, but went for the Ironman because they were on crazy sale and wanted to try it before committing to a $1000+ piece of kit. I honestly think the standard design works better for most 4x4 or road trips because of how quickly they deploy, the Ironman works fine without guylines in calm conditions so takes 1-2 min to set up. We just drove our family on a 4,000 mile road trip and used it tons for a quick road side lunch, can’t imagine I would take the time to set up a Batwing or similar in that situation and the free standing 270s while quick are too bulky, heavy, and expensive for my liking. I am ordering a square drop off-road camper soon though and definitely putting the Batwing on that, makes a ton of sense in a base camp situation where you can venture off in the truck during the day and leave the awning set up.

These Quick Mounts from Ironman are game-changers!
I have a set on my GX, and on my trailer.
Its SO nice to take the awning on and off instantly.
Very sturdy, and a simple but smart design. I’d buy them again in a heartbeat.
