Thanks for the comments - I'll put some pictures from Sudan in the next few days!

seems like you're having a blast!
How is the tech stuff on the car holding up?
Anything you would change?
Is it normal with that much tire wear?
And how much does the car weigh, front and rear packed?

The best for Norway! good luck, have a safe trip.

Very cool trip. What tyres are you running and getting those punctures? They look like Toyo Open Countries.

You can run just about any good quality tire in that environment and still going to get numerous punctures, this happened to me above the arctic circle in Alaska a few years ago. I was running BFG's Mud terrin and had about the same amount of punctures. My solution was an extra spare, an lost of tire plugs.

Hi all thanks for the comments!

Yes the Tyres are Toyo open counties and they had done around 18,000 miles by that point are pretty hard African terrain. It doesn't really seam to matter what tyres you run most people end up getting punctures like this after how we have been treating the vehicle! BF Goodrich A/T seam to be the best mind. Currently running some Africa market only Yokohama tubed tyres M/T which are awesome in the mud!

Car is holding up so well, it is a 2h=so engine is fine, just have to change the oil every 3000km. I think the worst problem we had was the rear differential input seal died on some tracks in Southern Sudan. Luckly I had a spare so it was just a 2 hour job on the side of the road.

Currently the drivers window regulator is broken so the glass keeps falling down which is a real problem in Nairobi - the capital of robbery! I also have to replace all the suspension bushes as the grease in them attracted sand and killed the bushes. They where expensive polyuronthene onces, so I am going to replace them with cheepo african made ones - which I think will last longer!

I wouldn't change too much apart from having bigger batteries for the Solar so we can store more power. Convert the lights to Xenon. Oh and buy more expensive non chinease made roof top tents which don't leak!

I have pictures of lots of African '60s which I will post up, including a superb stretched safari 60 that could seat 11! (Just don't look at the stretched welding underneath....!)

military michelins may be the ticket. i think they jump from 29" to 34" though and then go huge. i've heard you can ride them flat because of the steel sidewall.

4WD Systems | Gear to Goannawhere is the website where I got lots of my parts from, ask for Tom and say you have heard of my landcruiser (Gwyn / Overlandinthesun).

Those michelens look awesome, similar tread pattern to my yokohama that I have on it now. However the problem would be buying them in Ethiopia. The town that we bought tyres there was the option of some chinese tyres, some Indian tyres, some Ethiopia made tyres, Yokohama, fake Bridgestone or possibly real Bridgestone. And this was much more option than the previous two towns we had looked in!

yeah but the michelins may have lasted the entire trip if u started with them lol. i've seen crushed bullets between the treads but the tire still holds air. i used to have the 36" size on a sidekick, drove over 3 1/2" spikes on purpose just to show them off. 4 ply steel on top!! BUT they're very heavy.

anyway, i swapped a 2h in my 62 so it looks identical to yours, awsome to see it used for it's intended purpose. i'm very jealous. good luck!!

They quite probably would have lasted the whole trip, but I was given the Toyo's and you can't argue with Free!

It is a truely awesome trip and something that all '60s should do!

Oh and the old landcruiser can rescue much newer varieties!

Interestingly, my hj60 got stuck twice over the 6 day drive into Kenya, the special edition safari 100 got stuck 6 times, and used 30 litres more fuel!

You won't believe what happened last night...

So i stupidly paid someone to change the oil yesterday, (its difficult to do it yourself when you have no fixed place to live!) but the guy didn't tighten up the oil filter properly (its a big old screw on type)

Driving home at night, in Nairobi (also know as Nairobbery) the car lacked power going up a hill - this feels odd I thought, stopped and jumped out to see all 10 litres of engine oil flowing down the road...

Fxxx!

Stopping in the dark in Nairobi is not the most intelligent thing to do - but fixing a car on the side of the road? hmmm something bad is going to happen..

But it didn't!

Put a new filter on and filled 'er up with new oil and she started as if nothing had happened!

Love to see how long a modern engine would last with no oil in it! Good old Toyota 2h engine..

You are lucky as hell. Good luck with the rest of your trip!
