I have a chance to pick up a very lightly used Generac iX2000 generator for $350. I already have a 3500 watt old/big/noisy/heavy Kohler generator for home power back up already... the Generac would be for occasional portable & camping use and as a backup/extra at home.

If you have one or have used one, what do you think? I am particularly interested in the noise level... I know the Hondas are well regarded in that area but they are pricy (I had been trolling for a Honda EU2000 when I found the Generac. This is not a NEED purchase for me.

I bought a cheapie, returned it within the hour...went to my local True Value and bought a Honda off the shelf for $999...fueled, tested, ready. Most folks don't realize it's running at camp, and that alone makes it worth it.

cheapie being a Generac? I have heard Generac is a very well respected brand...

my 'cheapie' was not...but I've yet to hear another generator that's quieter than the Honda's...

but I've yet to hear another generator that's quieter than the Honda's...

You said something funny... hee hee

Another data point.

My brother is so tight he squeaks when he walks. If there's a cheap way to do something and a good way, he'll try to make cheap work if he possibly can.

He and my SIL run a biz making homemade soap, so go to festivals practically ever week when it's reasonably warm. They camp in a little 14' trailer that's circa 1960 (with a few mods;))

He's got a Honda and I'm certain he'd never of bought one if he thought anything cheaper would work. It's the one piece of his gear that I envy. Someday, I'll have one, too:hillbilly:

Generac was bought out so who knows the quality now.

I too read the reviews of the Generac, and decided against it. No sense spending 600+ bucks and still wishing you wouldv'e spent a little bit more, and have a good investment. Did that a few times, and no more...like throwing money away.

Now...if you can find a nice used Honda unit, that's another story.

I have a Honda EU2000i generator and its been great. I use it when camping, I used almost 7 days 24/7 when tornado wiped out out power, its very quite and puts out reasonable power and very portable. It was around $1K a couple of years ago and I would buy Honda again without hesitation.

I know your question was about a different brand / model but just wanted to say....Honda is the one stop shop for generators.

I have been looking at 5500 watt Generac generators for some time now. They are a quality unit and alot of bang for the buck. Honda's are top of the line and very expensive when you compare watt to watt output. They are the quietest ones on the market.

Generac makes 3 different "grades" of generators as do several manufacturers. It's important to compare apples to apples here.

Any opinions on the Yamaha inverter based small generators?
