OPERATION HOOD VENT LOUVERS

For all of you who drive the 3FE UNDERpowered 80-Series, you know these rigs make a lot
of heat under the hood! My first thought was to give the rear of the hood, the hotrod look, but
actually attempting to release the heat as well! The function is the fashion. With the use of longer bolts and three thick washers later. I also removed the rubber seal on the backside to release as much air as possible.

The ADV80 has been rolling like this for at least a couple of years(?).

I purchased some Pontiac GTX vents that sat the the garage... I just didn't like the plastic and
they are covered so the amount of 'release" just seemed minimal for the amount of work it was
going to require. Yes, I could have removed the undercover, but my enthusiasm was simply curved
or curbed....

I was visiting a long time buddy who was into the whole rally thing with us and apart of our GravelCrew.
Seems as though we are all on the same wavelength as he now has a Land Rover and doing the dirt
course in slow speed too! He told me where I got his louvers made but what they had on the website
didn't quite fit what I wanted to do.

I finally got time to visit the louver maker:

I took some samples he had and started test fitting with them to see what I thought would work.
Yes, this is on backwards, but the overall shape is what I was looking at - just longer.

We take a lot of measurements that day:

A few days later I receive an email with his proposed vent panel. Yes, I wanted a LOT OF VENTING!

37754775542_caa8a54b0a_z.jpg

A few days after that I receive a package of vents!

I remove my hood and take it into the garage. Remember, I live in a townhome...
Not the most ideal working conditions, but I make it work as best as possible.

Serious time! I use the panel to make some marks so I can have some guidance for cutting!

36450471332_4178c852c6_z.jpg

With the bolt holes marked, I draw a line inside as this will be my cut line.

CUTTING TIME!!!

First line cut! No turning back now!

36481587961_78b8527265_z.jpg

The easy bake oven door is now cut!
35784298274_c4369d6516_z.jpg

The trick is to only cut the surface sheet and not the subframe below as best possible.

36619594055_6e97acb25e_z.jpg

I file the edges... But that's no fun..
I NEED SPARKS!!!!

Laser beam sparks!
35810241363_069b2f7926_z.jpg

Measurement what size drill bit needed to sink the bolts through with a little safety allowance.
36619596635_49b2f24cbc_z.jpg

Now it's time to drill some bolt holes.

That's a big hole! Better for me to dream about a diesel or LS swap with!

Lets do some side vents now!

Sorry, the whole motorsports side of me is coming out with these side vents!
36450483592_4c9b1c8db0_z.jpg

Just so I don't get messed up and cut the wrong shape in the hood on the wrong side...

35810242933_84386476f9_z.jpg

The blue tape now comes into play as I use it for it's natural body line and guide for the
side vent plates.

Holes indicated and cut-lines drawn..

Underneath I take a photo of the remaining two stickers - never saw what the other sticker was...

BRAAAP!

One down and one more to go!

Attitude Adjustment Device - that's an old sticker from my past...
As you can see, there is the sub-frame that will require some "going through" with the screws.
35784324064_dd21cee45d_z.jpg

Take some measurements as to what will be needed to clear the socket installing the nuts.
35810248513_32dce2640f_z.jpg

Silver market indicates diameter needed to allow the socket to fit down into the thickness of the subframe.
36450490412_9ca2cacbe6_z.jpg

Awww darn! No sparks for fancy photos...

35784329874_7e2cd34e10_z.jpg

They work great for working in the garage too!

35784329394_df487e80eb_z.jpg

LUNCH TIME!!!! And paint dry time.
36450490642_dfaa01f45e_z.jpg

36619596765_ff3ae2d8f1_c.jpg

Time to start putting in all the bolts! See, I read instructions!!!
PS: This is where I got the louvers from too! RodLouvers.com

36481606881_a8fcd37ff0_z.jpg

I start with putting the side vents on first.

36450465322_45f1af0dcf_z.jpg

BOOM!!! RHYS MILLEN BETTER WATCH OUT!!!

THIS IS SOOOOOOOooooooo...... GOING TO WORK!!!

36595794442_4b272d3180_z.jpg

Nothing like a little rattle-can action, but with NON-REFLECTIVE paint!!!

35931294144_3d8919b91a_z.jpg

That will about do it...

If you like what you see, give Dave a call at RodLouvers.com and ask for the 80-Series "BIG PLATE!"
The side vents are just my extra two-cents worth thrown in...

Cool. Why not just stop with step one “remove hood and put in garage”?

Hey, just because I am from Alabama and grew up in a trailer park doesn't mean I have to show my true colors...

Go back to the second part of part-1, I live in a townhome within Southern California....
Removing the hood permanently would not be so... "hood-neighborly!" ehehhe

The vents semi-disguises the fact that half of the hood is now gone!

Never would’ve guessed Alabama... SHOCKED!

Gee I feel inadequate now running around with my z34 lumnia vents now. That's similar to what Jeremy Clarkson did to the land rover in the Bolivia trip on Top gear. I need a beer

The Jeep JK hood louver kit from Poison Spider fits the 80 series hood almost like it was made for it. I was absolutely blown away by how close it fits! The washer nozzles even line up perfectly!!

I haven't worked up the courage to cut up a perfectly good hood yet... still have some Blue fan clutch modifying to complete before I go complete cave man on my perfectly good (albeit trail rashed) sheet metal.

I’m doing louvers too, got em from eBay for 105.00 shipped. Mild steel, comes with stainless hardware and backing plates. I’ll install em next week. Brand is “Simpson offroad” and very nice quality. I’ll point them and take em off for powdercoat. They have a Big Center one too, if I think it needs some t after some testing with these.

Yea, no sorry Manrake, I know I should have been more technical about it... but yea, no, I did no testing of the sort.
My firewall/floorboard gets hot, duh! There is a fuel combusting motor in there... Wanted it cooler under the hood, wanted to cool without having to raise the hood. I lick my thumb and stick it in the air for technical matters or sort.... 'BAMA-TECH!" I'm a "Cali-Bamaian"

So what are your before and after under hood temps, IAT, and oil and coolant temps?

The RodLouvers are made in the USA here in southern Califronia and made from ALUMINUM as these poor 3FE UNDERpowered 80-Series do not need extra Weight! hehehe

Well then, is your floor board area noticeably cooler now?

Aluminum is heavy! Gotta go carbon fiber! Hehe.

So how do you know it's making any difference? If you never measured beforehand, how do you know there was ever any overheating condition in the first place?
