Congrats on completing training. Be safe Darin. It is a tough job, but rewarding.

Found this in a MUD member's sig

“ I THINK IT IS JUST TERRIBLE AND DISGUSTING HOW EVERYONE HAS TREATED LANCE ARMSTRONG, ESPECIALLY AFTER WHAT HE ACHIEVED, WINNING SEVEN TOUR DE FRANCE RACES WHILE ON DRUGS. WHEN I WAS ON DRUGS, I COULDN'T EVEN FIND MY BIKE.” ~WILLIE NELSON~

Holy crap man! Good luck!!

Takng a couple weeks vacation from the shop and going to Alaska to help fight fires up there. Not too sure how much of a vacation it really will be, but something I have always wanted to do and there is no time like the present. Then looking into trying to Smoke Jump next year. :)

Have a great time Darren, sounds like an interesting time.

Congrats Sarge on that achievement! I know you will be safe, and keep others from being unsafe. Have an excellent time.

This thing is just far too cool, skip to the end for the road test

Interesting read about hackers taking over a car by remote.

This is the kind of thing that worries me about all the technology in our vehicles today. First off, forget fixing any of it yourself, it really is not a matter of fixing in most cases anyway, the dealer just swaps out old parts for new. But if something within the computer control system goes down it becomes a whole vehicle issue.

I do think that this technology can be an advantage. I just installed a new head unit in Heather's 80 and I am impressed to say the least. The unit puts out killer sound to begin with, but it does so much more. It plays CDs, DVDs, blue tooth allows hands free phone use and also allows use of Pandora and cloning the phones functions like You Tube etc. We are still exploring all the functions. Oh yeah, has built in NAV or can use the NAV from your phone. The beauty of it is that it is stand alone and is not tied into the vehicle's operating systems. So if something goes south with it, it is only the head unit, not the operating system of the truck.

I think that for our purposes we will never be purchasing a new car or truck. I am OK with technology like mentioned above along with computer controlled engines and transmissions so long as they are stand alone systems. I feel that the more on board computer systems a vehicle has that interface the better chance of malfunctions occurring.

A great many of us express interest in something like a bare bones 70 series, it will have a modern power plant and drive train but bare bones when it comes to gadgets etc. Perfect...................................

Harris Teeters in the CLT area. Not sure about elsewhere. Damn good deal.

I don't have pics and I really need to get a dash cam with as much driving as I do, but here is what I saw while driving near 485 and Lawyers Rd.

I was at a T-intersection and had to wait for a mid 90's Jeep Grand Cherokee to pass. I turned behind him and caught up rather quickly. He had large chrome rims, at least 18's. The rear end was very low like he had weight in the back, also the front end was very high like he put a lift on the front only. As we begin to cross over 485 I could see that his front wheels were shaking violently and he swerved left, corrected right and just about lost it. I slowed and was ready to pull over and help someone out of the wreckage. He slowed and got it under control and continued on. I got on 485 and he went straight on Lawyers, I was only behind him for about two minutes.

Is that what "death wobble" looks like?
I have never experienced it but that was the first thing that came to mind. It looked deadly.

Yup, death wobble. The lift in the front only compounds caster issues .....

Imagine the resonate shaking you have seen happen on shopping cart casters. The resonate frequency for a larger mass is much lower but the physics is much the same, complicated in cars by the addition of suspension which allows the whole vehicle to rock at the same frequency.

Shopping carts with large amounts of lift are simply awful.

Important to note ... wrong caster can help induce the wobble, however, even correct caster setups can experience it if steering linkages are loose enough to allow it.

As for conversions, I still have not driven a V8 swapped LC! I need to find someone with one so I can feel the raw power :D IMHO, the low-end torque and efficiency of a diesel is perfectly matched to a LC, but I've accepted the fact that I drive a 60 (tractor), not a 100 or 120 (luxury SUV):D

For kicks I went back to read the start of the chat thread.

We still need to remedy this. :steer:

Yes we do!! I need to come up with an excuse to make it up your way.

The Vortec swapped LCs are very similar to how a Tahoe or Suburban drive, obviously suspension differences will be noticed. The major difference is not off road but rather on road. The vehicle becomes more drivable in today's traffic stream. Think merging on the interstate at 60-70 MPH instead of 40-50 MPH, pushing down the pedal at 65MPH and running right up to 75-80 MPH to pass someone. Now if you go all in with a 6.2L with a cam and the right pipes you can smoke the tires off if so inclined.
