I'm 90% sure that those aren't 4wd (or at least they weren't when they were talking about the concept at SEMA) which you would need in the dunes of the Dakar to be competitive.
Not that this validates anything, but Robby Gordon's Hummer-eque thing has run 2WD in the Dakar.

Looks like i must be on Andrews ignore list ;)

Huh? What event you waiting for? You did get your invite to the cookout for the record ;)

 Only kidding..... seemed nicer than a repost comment and really just bored sick in bed

2wd in dakar is a relatively new thing and I don't believe had garnered any podium places from it.

Since it is basically a kit car it may also not be allowed in Dakar as it had to be based on a production vehicle.... at least in years past it did. I followed in last year but know there were rule changes and couldn't follow it as closely as i'd like to.

If anyone wants to skim through the rule book for cars/trucks be my guest.

Toyota Hilux Evo – a bold new approach to Dakar 2017 - Toyota

I think 4wd is key to the Dakar. 2wd with CTIS has not worked for Robby among a few other things. :<)

I think Robbys lack of success has been a combination of bad luck, having a self serving teammate in Nassir (I think that's who ran his other truck that one year), and Robby being Robby(flat out 100 % all the time instead of laying back to about 80% to pace for the long haul).

The 2nd vs 4wd argument at baja was had many years ago when the trophy trucks came along. they showed that light weight, high hp, mondo travel, and big tires could overcome the 4wd advantage. took a few years to build in the reliability, but once the gap closed, 2wd trucks started taking the overall wins.

With Dakar, the dunes are the only real place where 4wd could trump a 2wd. the new hilux is a lot lighter than its 4wd predecessor, so it will be quite interesting to see how it does overall. it's like going from a big truck to a rail buggy.

Rail buggies or sand rails have paddle tires which aren't legal in Dakar. The difference in running my friends sand rail at Glamis one general grabbers vs a paddle tire was night n day

Dakar is a different beast than the 1000. There was a great article in dirt sports magazine with all the industry experts comparing the two and explaining why a trophy truck would get trashed in terms of time in the Dakar. The concession was that the deeper sands in Dakar combined with the tighter courses through the mountains would cause quite a bit of trouble for a trophy truck.

but i'll be interested to see if toyota can pull it off..... Robbie has done pretty good considering he isn't factory backed, the factory part may help toyota be quite a bit more successful.

All of this talk of the 1000 and trophy trucks is making me miss my old desert stomping grounds. And wants me to try and make a trip to watch the 1000 again, it's been way too long.

I've been wanting to go since about 1987. Maybe one day it'll work out. I think I've accepted that I won't be going there to compete.

All company cars are off road worthy, but not 4wd...

ill let you know when I'm going again then but most likely won't be for a while.

You need to do a Roadkill Stubby Bob sort of thing.

well if we are talking diesel rat rods....... i figure this will be along the lines of Casale's summer cruiser when he gets to building a 40 ;)
