Mudders,

There are many threads lamenting the discontinuation and subsequent unavailability of the much-lauded 90915-20004 JDM filter. Many have tried to find the next best replacement, while others thought the real deal was too expensive, anyway. With my last 90915-20004 dangling on the side of the engine block facing replacement, I gave it one last hoorah and searched for any filters tucked away in the annals of the automotive parts world.

Right before falling out of my chair, I found a saint by the name of Luis Salazar at Carson Toyota who supposedly had some on hand. After being reassured they're the JDM, discontinued filter, I ordered a dozen. They're not cheap, at $15.97 a pop, but it's a price I was okay paying. I haven't yet received them, but am confident they're genuine given my conversations wih Luis and having found his name in Supra forums (if anyone's as particular as us, it's the Supra folk).

Anyway, I wanted to let those of you who are fans of the filter know that there are a few more out there. I'm not affiliated with this fella in any way, and am merely passing along this info. Also, I know this may not be considered tech, but since there have been soooo any threads comparing other filters to 90915-20004, I felt this is the best place to post. Mods: Please do what you've got to do.

It's good to know they are still out there. Unfortunately it's to rich for my blood.

What's the failure point of the Current Thailand made filter?
I just run OEM for filter, because I read somewhere that they were very good and they are super cheap $45/10 on Ebay.

I wouldn't say it's a matter of failure points, but a matter of filtration quality, and I have no doubt all of the Toyota filters are sufficient, at a minimum.

The cheap toyota filters seem every bit as high quality as any other filters I have seen.

There are quite a few threads on here with pictures, comments and used oil analyses regarding the 90915-20004. It's reputed to be a higher quality filter than most, but I'm no expert. Perhaps Beno has something to add, as I recall him commenting on the quailty of some current OEM filters.

At any rate, this wasn't about pushing these filters on anybody. I just found some after searching and wanted to share. I'm sure there are plenty of great--and cheaper-- filters to choose from.

Best,
Matt

Hey Stylo07, thanks for your research and for posting this info here. I have been looking for this JDM filters. I'm glad there are still some left at that dealer. I ordered one box (10 filters) and yes they are expensive including shipping. Thanks again.

CDan recently posted up in another oil filter thread that one of the differences between the Made in Japan and Made in Thailand oil filter is that the filter media in the Japanese is superior to the Thai filter.

I was advised against using the Thai filter and to instead use the Napa Gold or Wix filter in its place.

To be clear, not by me.

I'm glad I bought 10 when they weren't discontinued. At my miles per year I'm stocked for 15 more years. Or in 5 years they'll be worth $100 a pop and they'll fund some new meats. :)

Oil should be changed AT LEAST once a year. So that is 10 years max....

Yeah....yeah... I figured some one would call me on that! This is where I would say something about current synthetic oils and their ability to properly function beyond the OLD standard 1 year life cycle. But I'm not going to do that. :D

I need some filters, this seems like a fantastic find. Ordering on Monday

Is it true that at heavy throttle the filter is mostly bypassed?
I think we may be splitting hairs here.
I'm trying to find a way to twist this into, "I used the Thailand filter and suddenly my head gasket went!"

I read on Bobistheoilguy that filters don't even come into play until the oil is heated up to operating temp.

The operating temp listed there was one ninety-something. Then I got to thinking that since my radiator/thermostat/water pump change my engine temps never get out of the 180's.

This may have been a fluke but I a year or so ago I found that when I changed my oil and replaced the Japan 90915-20004 filter I saw loose fibers bulging out through the internal holes of the filter (when looking up inside the center hole). I also found the same type fiber stuck on the engine oil dipstick a few times that looked like it had come out of that filter. So it appeared to me that the filter media of that particular 90915-20004 filter was coming apart and some of the fibers were getting into the oiling system.

FWIW I do regular engine oil analysis and can't say that I've seen any particular trend with the results when using different brands of oil filter (Mobil 1 filter, Japan 90915-20004, OEM Thailand filter).

$16 seems pretty rich. What is CDan selling them for?

I'm not sure what CDan (or other Mud vendors) sells the 90915-20004 filter for, but the main point is that the OP found the "no longer available" Japanese filter and that is why the price is what it is. Supply and demand.

The current 90915-20004 is of Thai manufacture. It is not the same as the 90915-YZZD3 OR the Japanese 20004. I have the Thai version at $8.75 a copy.
