Geez....Before spending any money on modifications, you should suggest that both of you (gotta do it together or there might be some offense taken) "for safety reasons", take a defensive driving course.

I appreciate the advice, and suggested the same thing already... I am pretty concerned myself :(

right....giant tall SUV with huge tires and "no memory of what happened..." uhm.

not a defensive course...an actual driving course on handling..

O man. Glad your wife walked away.

I echo concern and balance to mods. It's not discussed as often but there is real risk to the way off-roaders typically mod vehicle. Between the high center of gravity, slinky suspension and focus on articulation (sway bars be damned), steel bumpers that channel impact energy directly into the frame, lost accident avoidance capability, all the way into real likelihood for roll-over risk...

A major reason I've leaned into the LX570 is exactly for those reasons. AHC is a huge asset in not sacrificing stability while having the duality of lift clearance and articulation on demand.

Even decisions like 17" wheels with super tall rubber - that in itself can compound and create a rollover situation when losing pressure at speed.

You're in the right rig to take care of your family while unlocked huge capability.

There is more to it that I dont want to get into here, but this is accident #5 in 2 years.

Yes. It is infuriating and concerning. I am at my wits end with her. There is something going on with her psychologically where I think she may just not be present at times.

The alignment was just performed hours before. I had the low and high speed adjustment dialed. Zero body roll in turns or brake dive. Sway bar in the rear was retained with extended end links. IMO it was not the cars fault.

She drove a lifted GX460 on even taller tires for 2 years, until we traded it in 5 years ago. Zero issues.

She hasn't been the same since she had COVID. Depression. Anxiety. Aggression. Zoning out, etc.

Dont know what to do other than try to be supportive and encourage treatment and therapy.

Buy her a sherman tank and just send flyers out to the rest of the neighborhood "stay clear of the tank." Sorry for your troubles homie--my wife has had some significant medical-related decline over the past decade too (who doesn't?). Hang in there and keep being a good man ✊

Wow. I hope you get to the bottom of it. Until then, it would be off limits to the man toys and she gets to drive a 5 star crash rated shoebox.

Maybe put in a 3 camera Wolfbox mirror dash cam and see what's actually going on?
A dashcam is a necessity at this point.

Man I am so sorry about your wife's struggles. It's hard to watch a partner languish.

While my GX was at the Lexus dealership they gave us a loaner 2025 Lexus TX and the safety features and lane keeping tech was phenomenal. I really do think she needs those things. She currently has a 2020 Odyssey that my Mom borrowed for a road trip, and I am pretty sure the wreck wouldn't have happened if she was in it instead since it has similar safety technology.

I am a disabled veteran and every day is a battle with my own mental health. This whole week has been a blur of adrenaline and masking frustration, and I am trying to stay positive. Been eating my anxiety meds like M&Ms and I need a break.

If you guys dont mind, I would like to circle back to my new LX and am open to suggestions for first things to check or service on it.

My oldest son pointed out a small star crack in the windshield yesterday. I am thinking modification #1 will be getting UV ceramic film by a window repair shop after they address the crack.

Would also like to start taking steps to bulletproof it like an all aluminum radiator. Any suggestions?

Ceramic tint is a no-brainer in a sunny place. The stock radiator is more than up to the task, but if you do replace it, be sure to get the updated version. The plastic tank on the top of the older radiators has a stamped raised portion that can start to crack with time. Easy to see/diagnose, so if your radiator *looks* good, odds are it is good.

Do you have records on when AHC was serviced? Fluid change might be in order. Also, how many miles? The starter may crap out without warning once you're in the mid-100's. Mine did at ~160k ish. Starter is a real bear to replace, so better to do it pre-emptively.

Have you augmented/preloaded the rear springs with spring spacers to handle more load? Recommend 20mm all the way to 50mm if necessary. You can adjust the jounce stop within the coil spring by using a spacer above it in between the frame, or just augment the spring directly by using a spacer between the spring and jounce stop.

You can also control compression travel using the damper adjustment. Rather than just using comfort, for faster pace stuff, I may use sport off-road to manage compression.

I'm not a fan of the Timbren stuff. They seems to have limited bushings and just adapt it to vehicles with brackets. I do like Durobumps. They work great and go about their job in a transparent way.
Yea I’ve been running 2 20mm spacers in the top of the rear springs for years.

Totally get the dampening side of things. All I can say is a trail I have ran 50x in the last 5 years has a few spots where 20-40mph easily possible. All the whoops I used to hit in standard (height and compression) and never bottom out now bottom the rear of the truck out in standard height but sport mode.

Only change is tires (37-38)

I run no front sway bar. 24 or 26mm front spacer (don’t remember), rear had the shock mount chopped and raised 2 inches, 40mm spacers in the rear coils and timbren bumps.

I have run that set up for 2 years + with no issues.

I assumed my rear springs were just old and tired and not supporting the truck through those same spots like it has. Maybe it’s something else.

I’ll throw some Perry bumps on the rear and see if it helps at all.

Have never tried the ceramic tint stuff but I have heard a lot of hype about it. Want to keep this dash looking immaculate.

Radiator plastics looked black when I checked it over.

I just checked the CarFax report. Water pump was replaced at 146k miles in February 2024 but not a single mention of the AHC system.

I reached out to a service advisor at Sewell to have him run the VIN on his end. Thank you for the heads up there!

It is currently at 174k miles

Please tell me I dont need to pull the intake to do the starter lol

Very possible IMO and worth a try.

If it helps, I tried changing my rear springs on whim when I changed the rear jounce stops to eliminate airbags. I'm certain I gained back a bit more spring rate as it did better handling weight towing.

Spring wear is real with enough years, cycling, and heavy loads. Just as garage door springs get tired after a couple decades.

Sorry to hear and wish you guys the best.

Just thinking out loud, as I have a new driver in the household and not that that's exactly the same... I'm putting her in a much different car than my 200 series. Something that is inherently easier to handle has a number of ADAS / driver aids, and generally safer overall with very low rollover risk, and that is a Tesla.

I firmly believe people need better car handling skills. Folks have ZERO idea on the limits of their car. They give gas, they brake that's it. Ask someone how much distance they need to brake from 0-60, no clue yet they are driving 1 car distance behind in a 6500lb monstrosity.

I normally ride a motorcycle on my commute if I am not dropping the kids off at school that week, and what's most alarming is how many people are on their phones as they are driving. My bike puts me at eye level with lifted pickups and I can see into everyone's cars as I pass by. I am not saying that was the case with our recent incident, but I have been hit 3 times on my motorcycle involving people on their phones... It's a major factor in a significant amount of accidents that we all pay the price for with rising premiums.

“Sorry, I didn’t see you.” Even before cellphones.

Had this happen to me a number of times, last incident being a lifted 2500 started climbing over my Miata. The driver was on the phone and said he did not see me.

The issue is, at least in S/SE TX US, a truck is more common than a Camry and to most, its a sole mode of transport to get around, and many do not even have a drivers license.

One advice. Before you start the burn-money on mods, baselining and add-ons to the LX, go drive a 700 first. Yes, it is cozier than the 570s, but man the added tech in terms of convenience, safety and capabilities is 1000% worth it. If you have the means, just go for it. I doubt your wife would be able to roll it with all the safety tech added to it and I bet you it will do every trail your old modded GX would. Basically, it is the same safety tech as the TX, but in a Land Cruiser. Can't go wrong with that.
