Ugh, i have a pet peeve i need to get out.
People turning okay photos in to blurry messes to try and make it appear like they took a photo with a shallow depth of field, for whatever reason.
So when you take a photo with a small aperture, you can create a shallow depth of field (and by having objects that are at different distances). This picture is an example. See how the object in the front is in focus and the stuff in the back ground is blurred?
A large depth of field is created by using a larger aperture and having objects slightly further away.
See how most everything is in focus?
So, what people have been doing with bad editing programs/apps is taking a large depth of field picture, blurring everything around the object, and calling it a day. It looks very bad. One of the main problems is that as things are farther away, they are more blurry (or closer to the camera depending on the focal point). Also, things that are the same distance from the lens, are all at the same focal point. See this picture of text in a book showing what i mean.
This also shows the difference achieved by using 2 different f-stops
This is a picture showing what i am talking about. Notice how stuff that is blurred shouldn't be, and that everything has the same amount of blur to it? There is nothing wrong with this picture before the editing was done to it. The cone to the right of the tire should also be in focus since the tire is, but it is out of focus.
This is another picture showing the same thing.
