OEM Bumper Winch Mount

FYI, I spoke with TJM on the phone about this mount (957MTT1581C) and although it fits behind the OEM bumper/crossmember it's really designed to be used behind one of their bullbars to support the front tabs and provide side-to-side strength. The two diagonal supports are to keep the mount from sagging under the winch weight and not much else. Front support comes from the bullbar. Fitment instructions here: https://dealer.tjm.com.au/documents/957MTT1581C_1.pdf

I also contacted Jason at Cruisin Offroad who said he can't make a custom winch tray without having a truck left with him in BC for a few days for measurements, etc.

Bummer, I also want a lightweight OEM solution without having to custom fab myself.

No way would I trust that just that plate. Maybe on a straight pull, but not even at the full rated amount on an 8K winch.

Only 5/16ths thick? That is a hair over 1/4 of an inch (ok, so it's actually officially 1/16th over)... hanging out off the front without being really tied into the frame except at the back at the tie-down points (the side supports don't really count!).... Then you are putting the force on the plate off of straight ahead anyway, because the center of the drum is 3.5 inches up to begin with. Nope. Maybe you'll be fine, but maybe you are asking for damage and possibly death/destruction? Not a choice I am going to trust to that plate. If you do insist on doing this, definitely use the biggest washers you can find on the frame attachment points, and proper NEW 10.9 M14/50mm bolts.

I have yanked a lot of armored land cruisers(well over 6800 pounds) out of sh*!(literally sh*!) using the stock recovery points, I don't see how this winch plate is weaker than the stock recovery points.

Those 'stock' recovery points are tow hooks and tied downs. Literally, everything you read says don't use them. Just because you can use them and they haven't failed and killed someone does not mean they are in any way safe. Safe to me is 100% "I can count on my rated tow points never failing in any condition", not 99.9% "I've done it lots of times and it worked". And tying an odd-shaped piece of 5/16th's steel to the frame where the tow points mount is not the same as a 1/2 inch rated plate steel tow point or mounting a bumper to the frame. Each to their own.

I'm not trying to say they are optimal or the same at all, and definitely not better than, but I have never seen a stock recovery point fail on armored vehicles that weigh over 8,000lbs. We had a fleet of 20 armored Land Cruisers in off road + mountainous conditions. If we wanted to be 100% safe, we wouldn't take these vehicles into situations that can cause injury or damage.

So, is anyone selling a kit for this yet? Would be awesome to be able to buy the HF 12k Winch which is on sale for $299 today... Or perhaps a better winch at some point down the road, so that I could have a winch under my stock bumper... :)

There is a 20% and 25% off super coupon. Check their site. :)

Yeah, they also have it 25% off on their flyer so you can use the 25% off one on the remote or something else. I used it on the little pancake compressor they have ($44).

So, is it worth picking up the HF 12k winch for $299? I’m only starting to look into “stock” hidden winch options. Is this a good price for a winch? I may never even need to use it, but I feel like this is one of those things you should have on your truck if you do any sort of off-roading.

I see there is a DIY hack to make the HF 12k winch water proof. They also have a trailer hitch adapter for the winch... but it looks really flimsy... like I said, I just started looking into this today, so I don’t know what the options are. I don’t want to get an aftermarket bumper, for now.

This is the route I’m going. I have this winch plate I bought a few months back. Next year i will be adding a little more support to it. Then buying the HB winch along with remote and the extended warranty.

I was going to buy the Smitty Built winch but they are roughly the same price. With the HB local stores and extended warranty I figure that should cover me. I’ll also follow that video to water proof it.

There are really good reviews for their winch so I’m not too concerned. Especially with extended warranty.

Check with @WiscoProud he may still have his plate for sale.

Well, I did get the HF winch (I didn't see an option for extended warranties) and a TJM winch tray. I'm not sure if I will try to install them or not behind the stock bumper.

The stock tow hook (one at PS front and one at DS rear) is a forged steel piece that has a 7/8" ish wide base at the mounting holes and tapers down to about 5/8" thick above the strap retaining lip at the bottom. It isn't wimpy for sure unless you're using it incorrectly (which I admit in certain recovery situations is easy to do).

Unless you're doing snatch recovery (everything I have read suggests, don't) or are significantly over GVWR, I don't think there is much chance of failure.

Relevant sections from the manual are below, decide for yourself what's good for your health and safety....
