Sounds like the down pipe has to come off—at least on a 94 and older 80 Series. If there is a stub you can get small vice grips on, you may have other options using acetone/atf, heat and perhaps something like phosphoric acid?

I've pretty much given up hope. There will be no stub - it might even be below flush. It's also custom 3" exhaust, so there's absolutely no room. I think I'm just going to take it to an exhaust shop.

That is my contingency plan if things go sideways, those guys have forgotten more than I know
