You bring up an excellent issue. We should have seperate threads for fiberglass and aluminum tub bolt requirements. There are many differences compared to the stock steel tubs.

All the posts I have made are for a stock steel tub for a 2/71 FJ40. I measure each bolt as it's removed and use a thread gauge when required to determine the pitch (thread count or spacing). Plus I try to take a pic of the area the nut or bolt was removed from. It adds a lot of time to my project but when I'm done everyone can benefit from the work!

Steering Column Lower Boot Cover to Firewall

5 6mm x 1.0 x 20mm Split + Flat washer 10mm head

Carb base to Intake Studs

4 8mm x 1.25 12mm nuts. Note:13mm will NOT fit!

F Engine Alternator Mount to Block

2 10mm x 1.5 x 25mm Split + Flat washer. 14mm Head

Windshield Hold Down Hooks to Hood

4 6mm x 1.0 x 16mm Split + Flat washer. Phillips head screw

Hood Hold Down Hooks To Hood

4 6mm x 1.0 x 20mm Split + Flat washer. 10mm Head

just thought I'd add my 2 cents to this EXCELLENT thread.

I've gotten hardware at a place in Baltimore called Maryland Metrics.

They are a great shop that has ALL kind of hardware. They would be a great place to check on some of the more obscure hardware that can't be found elseware.
I was pretty happy with their pricing, but I have no idea how they compare to some of the other places listed so far.


Also Wurth is a really good professional place to get hardware and they have JIS Automotive as well.

you all need to get one of these cool gadgets!!!!

lets you quickly figure out bolt size and thread pitch. I think it was like $10???

Fastenal here will only sell bulk quantity. I end up at Ace Hardware or an obscure building supply place here in Rome, GA with a great metric selection. The guys make fun of me there as I am the only guy buying their metric stock!

we have a store here local. most of the stuff here is in packs of 10-20 which works out pretty good for me. I guess it must depend on the individual locations.

anybody ever find a good source for the M8 x 1.25 JIS in stainless? plenty of zinc out there, but i cant find stainless for the life of me.

i saw $OR has them in stainless for $1 EACH.

anybody know the source?

i used http://www.metricspecialties.com/ to get a bunch of stainless M6 and others, but they shipped me ISO M8 with 13 mm heads... i am already finding clearance issues with them, so i have to stop where i am.

keep up the good work. if my bolts werent all sitting in an ammo can, i'd be more helpful. great service to the LC community.

Where are you having clearance issues? I am just wondering so I could add special notes for certain bolts.

well, for starters, i am having problems putting 13mm head bolts on the oil pan. they almost fit, but not quite. i have had problems with other places on the block and a few on the body. those are mostly places where the bolt head fits fine, but a socket wont fit over the head in the space that remains. what a PITA. i would love to go all stainless but i am starting to think i am going to have to go zinc on the 12mms... argh.

if ANYBODY figures out where we can get M8x1.25 with a 12mm head in stainless, PLEASE POST IT! they ARE out there, somewhere. marv spector knows but he sure as hell aint tellin!

Here is a source for stainless hose clamps similiar to the OEM clamps. They carry a full line of metric stainless but alas not JIS automotive.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I could use hex head bolts like that are on I believe 79 and newer 40's in place of the Phillips style that are stock on the 78 and older. I am doing a 78 and the Philips never really made sense to me and was wondering if anyone has done or would know if I would run into issues with going hex head? I specifically am thinking about the recesses and bevels that are in say the hinges that allow the stock philiips to sink in slightly??

Any thoughts? I too would like a copy of your excel spread sheet, if your still offering. Just found this thread and this is a crazy mount of info! Thanks for all the work!

I'm not really sure it wouldn't work but can't say I know for sure, sorry. I know that www.4WheelAuto.com has that hinge set in stainless for about $16 b/c I spoke w/ them today about it.

This brings me to my next point. As I was calculating and speaking w/ a buddy who's redone 2 40's, he said that a complete set of stainless, washers, etc.. ran him about $400 - $500 for the truck. Anyone else think so? Reason is this is what I found through BlkDog (Thanks Jason):
