Opened her up tonight for surgery. Gonna get a lot of the power steering grunt work done before heading to 49T. Cranked on the pitman arm, broke a puller. Will try another with some heat this time...also soaked it in kroil and will hit it a few times a day until next go round.

Also reattached the speedo housing using the permatex/paper gasket/permatex method. Will let it sit overnight and then fill and see if it holds tomorrow or the next night. If it doesn't I honestly may light the whole thing on fire.

Also got the air cleaner back from powder coater. Blasting opened up a few pinholes on top so had to use a little body filler. Will take a few coats and a lot of sanding but should turn out fine.

Finally I'm missing th mounts that go on front and rear of the air cleaner, attaching it to the valve cover. If anyone knows a source I'm a buyer.

Coming along nicely!

The way i've taken stubborn pitman arms off old CJs was to make a few small cuts on the pitman arm itself to weaken it (not all the way through to mess the splines up). A conical shaped puller is what I've used the last few times without a problem now. It doesn't break like the two armed pullers do

After seeing all the '40s at SCC this year I kind of caught the fever, and have been looking casually at options.

Couple questions though, since you guys are the experts.

Are any year models better or worse than others?

Any gotchas to be looking for (outside of the normal used truck stuff)?

Any other advice would be appeciated!

Holy 5.5 year project !

Holy 5.5 year project !

Not so fast, it's not over yet!

In my defense there are two new kids and my business quadrupling in size mixed into that window. Kind of had an impact on my free time.

Plus, you know, EAF

Are you planning on staying with the carb long term?

I just ordered the universal TBI kit from affordable fuel injection for the AMC 4.2 258 I6 in my YJ . The massive amounts of emission crap they put on a carb'd system in the late '80s has always been problematic. They tune them to the application and include the necessary adapter. I already have a CRT brand HEI to go with it.

Got the power steering pump mounted up, using @orangefj45 mount and pulley. Thanks to @MScruiser for the quick phone call and instructions. Saved a ton of time for sure. Went in pretty easy, lined up perfect. Belt is on, spins great.

Got the mini truck power steering box cleaned up pretty good. Think I will leave like this and not paint. Before and after.

Question tho...factory manual box had a plate mounted to the side of it, a heat shield between it and header. Mounting holes don't line up with new power box. Am I gonna be ok without that? I do plan on running a PS cooler. Already have it.

Didn't fill the transfer case to test the new seal. Ran out of time. Plus I hate 90w...

Nice work bud!!!!!

Since you're running a header, a heat shield on the ps pump would be a solid idea. I would make something out of aluminum, maybe 1/16" thick.

Thanks Georg.

Looking at it I think I can make factory heat shield work. BUT I will have to remove two of the bolts in below pic. This pump shows zero signs of any prior leak...question is, will removing these bolts increase risk it leaks when I fire it up?

I think as long as you do not loosen the other two bolts, and properly retorque the other two after you install the shield, you should be fine.

Iirc, the torque specs on those bolts are fairly big for their size.

All done but a fitting for high pressure hose to pump connection. Will be here Tuesday. If anyone sees anything I've done wrong plz speak up. Obviously my first time.

Also buttoned up the driveline again, to the parking brake drum. Hopefully no leak going forward. We shall see in the morning.

@orangefj45 , do you know the high pressure fitting sizes on the pump and box?
