Good news.

Cruiser is running great. Pulled everything off the motor, compression tested everything, everything came out great. Put everything back together, new oil, new gas (drained tank) new starter, new plugs, new PCV, 2x checked all vacuum, reset timing, and finally installed new carb.

Fired right up, first time. Tuned the carb and she runs like a champ, idles great.

Only thing left to do is drill the firewall to install the weber pedal and cable kit, which I am dreading doing. Hate to drill new holes, but have to know if the issue of it backfiring and sputtering under stress is still there. Only way to know is to drive it and see. Only way to drive it is to drill the firewall and install the pedal. Gonna send Jeff a PM and see if he can shoot me a pic of how his is mounted.

Unfortunately no access to a trailer to get it back to my house this weekend, so it will be a few days...excited again though.

Awesome news!

Awesome! Did they figure out what happened?

Is there a hole on your stock pedal for a hand throttle? There is on my 60, and that's what I used to attach a throttle cable for the TBI conversion. If you can attach a cable to the stock pedal you just need to drill one small hole for the cable. That would probably be easier than trying to mount a new pedal.

Haven't thought about that, will check. And thanks.

Mechanic says he has no firm answer. But thinks entire issue may have been old carb dumping excess gas into system for so long, and got way worse when it sat up over winter.

Per usual...the good news was short lived.

Drove her around today, and after a mile or so same issue. Engine dies under stress, any type of load, acceleration, etc.

Back to the mechanic.

Smoke is gone and compression is good. So recent issue is fixed. It's the old issue that's still there. I'm confident this guy can figure it out. We shall see soon enough. Really want to drive it.

Passed a really cool looking 40 on i20 today, had a RTT and lots of gear. Same color as mine. Looked like it was on a long haul trip. Very jealous of that.

Does this start after the truck warms up or from cold start?

Far as I can tell it's immediate. Slow or gradual acceleration is fine. Uphill or hard acceleration there is a 'pop' out of the air cleaner and exhaust and truck dies.
