Does Toyota currently have a DEF system on the 79 Series anywhere in the world? If the 4.5 V8 Toyota diesel only requires a small magic box to make it EPA compliant why is Toyota eyeing the Cummins motor for the Tundra?

It is very easy to import a vehicle for temporary use to flash at shows, however at the end of the day it must go back out of the country. If anyone was remotely thinking about one of these trucks require copies of the EPA and DOT paperwork and then call both agencies to confirm the documents are true!

Hey Scott - Great question/points.

A proxy for the process and challenges this firm will face can be seen in the efforts of GM and Cummins to have their crate motors certified under EPA and CARB as 50 state replacement motors. Both of these firms have decades of experience with the regulators, huge staffs (and budgets) and the leverage of broad/deep distribution in volume. Both programs have faced challenges and are working through them. I understand the R2.8L is still in the certification process.

Given self-disclosed challenges in capital formation and the "fuzzy" corporate history and staffing, the technical and regulatory challenges seem significant.

I know the Aussie's have DPF Systems on the Land cruiser trucks down there..

Given the diesel testing scandals (VW and others) it seems likely that EPA/CARB will be even more aggressive in their review of new players and new technologies.

There are a lot of ways to deal with emission management - DPF, urea injection, etc. but a black box magic bullet seems unlikely. As noted, if Toyota coulda, they woulda, so to speak.

Details, data and documentation.

FAIR AND BALANCED REPORTING

To be fair, I need a 79 Series (don't ask, its a business thing) and figured L79 America might be an option - an alternative to bringing one in on a Federal waiver. As has been discussed, waivers are available for foreign tourists, racers, manufacturers, museum, show, training, product development, testing, sales, etc., but at some point they have to go home, or be destroyed.

So I called the CEO/Project Manager as as posted (and been abused) above. Seems like a nice guy and if / when they get EPA, NHTSA, DOT, etc. approval, I might buy one.

He says that:
A) Original promoter is no longer involved
B) Their second truck will be on the ground here next week
C) They are on track for approval and will not have to crash one for the Feds
D) The regulators are being good to work with and he is confident things will work out

I will be at SEMA and will report back what I see, hear, think.

"FAKE NEWS"

I contacted him as well and he stated they should have one in Colorado Springs by the end of next month. I'm definitely driving down to look at it if/when it's here and will report back. I have my doubts but I'm in if it's on the up and up...

If you see a an '03 100 series and a BJ74 together in the classifieds, know it's legit!

still shows as the Papp Brothers, which one of which was the 1st promoter.

no address in Colorado Springs......

Yup. As I said, I have my doubts, but I'm willing to drive 60 miles to confirm or dispel what most of us agree is highly improbable. Quit crapping on a dream @Landpimp ;)

No...Transportation on you, food and libations on us as long as you agree to report fairly on your visit and pledge to purchase.

I'm guilty of many things in my life but unfair/dishonest reporting is not one of them. Looking forward to meeting you and a 79 next month!
