No BS...Has anyone in the US hooked a Manual Trans to the 1FZ-FE in an 80

Dave Stedman can get this stuff pretty easily out of Japan.

Dave was able to get me all needed stuff for my manual swap. It was surprisingly quicker and cheaper than expected. He was great to deal with as well.

Dave in Jap it's a great source of those " complicated " parts you can't source in NA .. but to be honest one of your best options it's Canada of mining truck 70 series ..

Those with H150 .. and Like 151 it's great tranny .. ( short on 1st and 2nd which will help with bigger tires and stock R&P ) ..

Note: HF2A and BF1A are complete different beasts, so if you are going with the H55F route you will have to source one BF1A for ya ( pretty easy from 60 series ).

In my sigh you can see ( Marilu thread ) what was involved in my Auto to Maual ( H150 ) tranny swap ..

Cool. Does anyone have contact info for this Dave in Japan? Do you just give him a list of part numbers and a big check?

I didn't give him part numbers, just told him what I was thinking of doing. He then gathered up part numbers, availability and prices for me. Never even charged my card till they shipped out.

One of my clients in USA to whom i helped to get all the parts for H151 conversion is thinking to part out with his truck and all the parts he got from me. Pm me and will find out more information for you.

Oh yeah... And Yan is a great source for non-US parts as well at very good prices....

You can clearance the body or do a 1" body lift to get the room to run the slave cylinder and shifter. The fj60 master cylinder bolts to the early model 80's and I used the 60 series hard lines as well.

I am waiting on the perfect H55 to show up and swap out the H42 that's in my 80 now. BTW the main reason I swapped mine out was for the extra power it allowed to the wheels compared to the auto and the marlin crawl box that would hook up to it. Double low is a nice feature.

Here is a good thread to read with lots of info. I jumped in on the last page, but my studies of the ecu/trans interaction lead me to believe if you can fake the trans sensors with default values (using resistors) and tell the ecu the trans is in neutral, it shouldn't affect driveability or throw errors (think about it... You can rev your engine in neutral at 60mph and not throw errors). The only time you get errors is if the truck thinks it should be shifting and the TCU doesn't get the responses it is expecting...

Bamapaul - do the h42 and h55 run the same bell housing?

Yep everything is the same bell housing wise and if you get the later model H42 like Bhamapping was talking about earlier you have a spacer on the end of the transmission making it the same length as the H55.

What year we talking about? I've got the 1996 version (although mine references the A343 obviously, the operating principles should be the same).

This 1HZ H55F bell housing arrived. The good and the bad news... it bolts up to the 1FZ block... only 5 of the large main mounting bolts align, two do not, and the starter bolts do not align. There is enough material in the bell housing to drill and tap for the 1FZ starter bolts. One of the dowel pins needs the hole drilled, the other will need a small amount welding/filler, then a drill and tap.

The short answer, do-able, but will require work.

Input shaft length???

I started to read through the ewd I have and it appears that the speed sensor wiring to the ecu comes from the combination meter which gets it from the transfer case

I'm doing a TPI setup for a buddy on a 350 and have run into a similar issue. I found a company that makes speed sensors just for this problem and has them for the older cable driven speedometers. Just need to determine the number of pulses per revolution.

1HZ + H55F = 200mm input shaft

2H + H55F = 180mm input shaft

there is also a longer version input for H55F tranny which it's 120mm length ( 3B + H55F combo ) what I don't know it's the specific length of the H151 that came behind 1FZ engines ..

How's this project coming along? I'm toying with the idea of swapping transmissions in this manner as well.
