no 4wd

they sell 80w90 and similar gear oils in two really common containers. One is the gallon. The other is like a skinny two quart bottle, tall and thin.

The skinny bottle comes with a nice little cap with a long tip. I usually keep an extra one of these bottles around (empty) just for such situtations.

you can also put fuel hose over the tip of the cap and squeeze the oil through the tube.

I'm not patient enough for that so i usually bend the bottle a bit and squeeze it between the frame/tranny and put it directly into the tranny.

yeah im gonna go buy a small bottle friday or saturday. I just am not patient.

so i learned something saturday. A kerosene pump works great to pump gear oil into tmission and tcase.

New question though? Can the imput and output shaft seals be replaced without dropping the whole case?

the output seals of the TC can be replaced with only removal of drive shafts. The front one will be harder than the back because of the tranny mount bracket.

I give it a 1.5 bananna without an impact.

.75 banna with an impact and case of beer. Did my front one in less than 45 min. If i'm not mistaken the seals in front/rear are the same.

You may have to help me out on the front then. I am gonna order the rear wednesday. Hopefully i can have it disconected by then so i can see if i need the repair sleeve.

once you get the DS disconnected you will know if you need the ready sleeve (temp fix).

If there is any up/down play on the shaft you know you have bearing issues and need a TC rebuild.

Chances are it's fine.

well i am back to square one on the 4wd. Put it in some mud and it did fine. Put it on a hill and uh oh. 4wd is not engaging. Tcase moves freely but when i lock the hubs it does not engage the front axle. The axle is leaking and needs rebuilt. Could that be the culprit?? The driver side hub has no resistance when i lock it. The passenger does right at the locking point. I did notice that in 4lo the shifter has vibration like it is trying to kick itself out of gear.

there is a good chance it's not fully engaging in 4wd. There are bushings and linkages in there that can go bad or be out of adjustment.

there is not any resistance on my locking hubs, not much anyway other than just the springs.

I was having issues with my 4low with my old tranny and when i put in my new tranny i was still having issues with 4lo.

I would put it in 4lo and on flat ground/mud it seemed fine. Then when i'd go up hill it would grind like crazy.

There is an adjustable ball joint in there. Moved it out about a 1/4 of an inch and started working perfect after that.

Linkage was my issue all along.

you can unbolt all the linkage and manually put it in 4wd and high or low to see if it's in the linkage or the tranny.

you will need a spotter to see if your front drive shaft is spinning, might be able to pull your tranny mount cover and see it as well. it would make the linkage removal/adjustment easier.

IF your front drive shaft is moving it could mean it's in your front diff/hubs.

Some people drive their cruisers for years with leaky front knuckles. It's not a good idea and can cause damage especially if ran low on gear oil but many of those leaky cruisers are purchased by cruiser heads, knuckles are rebuilt and 4wd still works great.

My cruiser and john lee's are examples of that.

i'll get a rebuild kit in couple of months. Gotta come up with the moolah 1st.

i'd find the source of the issue before i do the knuckle rebuild. Granted it's a pressing issue that needs to be taken care of ASAP i'd try to find the source ot my 4wd problem first.

No sense in putting 8 hrs of work into a knuckle rebuild to find out the spider gears are shot and thats why you have no 4wd.

yeah i will get with u one saturday to figure it out.

Check all your mounts as well. Drivetrain movement can cause it to pop out of gear. Things get pretty tight under there, so a little movement could cause the linkage to hit something. Or it could be as simple as a bad detent ball in the t-case. Have you tried a bungee cord, it comes standard with a Mafia sticker I hear in the Upstate.

Jeremy

lol gonna put the dent on jack stands in a couple of days and see if the front drive shaft moves. Hoping it is just the hubs and not the tcase.

It is - but the thing is they always get where they are going. Now, they might have lost their flip flops but they will get there!

Most mafia members end up walking or having to catch a ride. That or we have to stop every mile or so and pickup something that fell off.

Hey gimpey we are swapping out my transmission and tcase on Saturday if you wanna come over and take a look at my 60 and we can look at it and see if we can trouble shoot it.

i think i am going to take the wife to commerce ga saturday if i am off. It was her birthday last week. If it falls through i will let u know. Pm me your # and i will call if i can come.

well here is what i have found out so far. I found a thread on mud of a fellow 60 owner who had the same problem. This is what someone said to do to check it out.

1. put trans in 1st. leave hubs in free. Front drive shaft should move. It does
2. Lock the hubs. If drive shaft still moves bad hubs.- It doesn't which means the hubs are locking.
3. Put hubs back in free and put tcase in 4wd. Drive shaft should not turn.- It didn't

So the case is engaging in 4wd. The hubs are locking=wtf!!! It is my understanding there is a zerk fitting for grease somewhere in the linkage or something. Anyone know where??? And what else do i check or should i just de attach the rear drive shaft, put in 4wd and see if it moves?? At a loss here dude

dropping rear drive shaft would be a good way to verify if the front wheels are pulling or not.

i always put my cruiser in netural. get out. lock hubs. get back in. put in 4wd then drive.

well apparently i am just crazy. Pulled the rear drive shaft, put it in 4wd and away we went. I am becoming my worst enemy.
