So my 4wd selector stick will not budge. I checked the tcase and it was dry. I put 2 qts of gear oil in it and still nothing. I have been told to check the linkage.

Question #1 Do i have to lock the hubs in order for it to shift into 4wd?

Question #2 In order to check the linkage could i remove the plate under the rubber boot at the shifter and see so i could check linkage? I am working by myself on this and really hoped it was something simple.

Question#3 A friend of mine(josh) thinks my clutch does not have enough "pressure". It goes around half way before any resistance is felt. If so could this issue be effecting 4wd as well. I have no trouble shifting 1-4gr however sometimes it grinds into reverse.:bang::crybaby:

1. you do not have to lock the hubs to engage the 4wd.
2. yes you could examine the linkage from the above, but it might be better to drop the skid plate and go at it from below.
3. your clutch issue would have no effect on your abillity to engage 4wd

most likely your 4wd plunger is frozen in place and could use a tap from a hammer....

*edit* isn't your 4hi vaccum engaged and 4lo shifter controled?? If so can you get 4hi to engage by pushing the button?

I thought i just pushed the clutch in and shifted from 2wd to 4wd?? I dunnot anthing about a button to engage or vacuum.

All H42's grind in reverse. It is the only gear that is not synchro'd.

I think JP is right about the plunger sticking. It is really the only mechanical part of the 4wd. Remove the skid and see if you can spray some lube on the plunger. While a buddy pulls the lever back, maybe tap the plunger out with a brass punch. Make sure the truck is in neutral in case it needs some play to line up the gears for the front output.

If that doesn't work, remove the linkage to determine if it is the linkage frozen or the tcase. If it's the Tcase, go ahead and remove it for a rebuild.

Also, if your case was dry, with no signs of a leak, then you might want to check the tranny. If the seal between the 2 is bad, all the fluid from the case will go to the tranny. Also, running the case without fluid could have melted something in the case together preventing the clutch forks from moving.

well it leaks. I found out today the drain plug leaks and it looks like it may leak somewhere else as well. May have a local mechanic take a look at it. If that is the case i think i could drop it for a rebuild. We'll see.

if it's filling the tranny with fluid and that's why it's dry and you can get it shifting with a little help from some lube and a hammer i wouldn't worry about a rebuild

If all else fails....then it's time for a rebuild

i couldn't get the transmission fill plug off to check it and my help and i were not getting along that day so i went no further.

those plugs can be a bear...a 6 point 24mm should do the trick. 1/2 drive wratchet and shallow socket should fit well.

If you can get your TC shifing i can help you make a transfer tube to put the over filled tranny fluid back into your TC. Have all the tap here at work and the parts are only a few bucks. I should even have some hose lying around here you can have.

I'll let u know.

wooo hoooo!!! So i drained the tcase today. Oil looked like #$%#. Problem with that is that it isnt that old. Anyway jumped in the cruiser and waa laa selector starts moving freely. Sooo, what does this mean?? That transmission fluid is leaking into case or what??

Oh and flame me all u want but where the heck is the tmission dipstick??

tc might have just been gummed up.

the tranny has no dip stick. It's set up like the TC. Has a drain and fill plug. Drain plug is at the bottom on of the tranny.

The tranny fill plug is about half way up the tranny in the center on the exhaust (drivers side)

It should be filled to the point you can put your finger in and fell some fluid.

If it's over filled (drains out a few quarts when you open it) your TC is filling your tranny up with fuild

if it's no then i say just change fluid in both tranny/tc and run her.

I have had a offer from clemson cruiser to help with rebuild and my case does leak but i really can't afford to fix it right now. As long as it does not leak something aweful when i refill everything it is gonna have to wait.

I think i will take u up on making the hose adapter. I have to refill it and move it tommorow cause it is parked in a bad spot in yard currently. I am gonna put some teflon tape on threads and gasket maker on washer and see it it quits leaking in the morning. Maybe one morning i can get the tap from you and any ideas on where to get the parts to make the adapter.

I sell the hose you need to make the adapter here at the shop if you can't find it elsewhere. I think it's 1.25 a ft.

as for the fittings the plumbing department of Homedepot will have everything you need.

2- 1/4 npt to 5/16 barbed fittings (male 1/4 npt on the end)
1- 1/4 npt 90deg fitting to 1/4 npt fitting (male on one side female on the other.

2 worm gear clamps.

2 ft of 5/16 fuel hose

You need OIL hose, not fuel hose...Not the same thing.
Also, teflon is a lubricant, not a sealer...more is not better.

oh, so teflon my not be any help then.

the hose i have in the shop will work for both gas and oil....both petrol based...I use it on 2 stroke engines all the time.

i did forget to mention the teflon tape, i think i have plenty around the shop, you can have some.

I already have the tape. I may hit u up over the weekend about the tap and hose.

ok what is the secret to filling the tmission back up. I bought 2 gallon size oil and a funnel with a hose. Not working. Of course the gallon container is way too big anyway. Do i just need the smaller bottle or what?? Oil is so thick it barely moves.
