It pains me to do this... but recent life events have forced me to choose between one of the two toys, my RB26 powered 300ZX, or my Cruiser... the Z won.


I am selling my Mitsubishi 4D34 powered 80 series. The complete build thread can be seen here...

I purchased this cruiser a little over 2 years ago in NY State with 197k miles on it, it was 100% stock. It was an original cloth interior/unlocked rig.

In October of 2011 I converted this truck to diesel, and at the same time a number of upgrades were made, including a factory locker retrofit. I have put just over 20k miles on the rig since then, driving it every day. It currently sits at just over 227k miles. The complete specs are as follows:

Engine

  • 1999 Mitsu 4D34 Engine - 145k miles when installed, now 165k miles. Always Shell Rotella and WIX Filters.
  • AW450-43LE/A442F Hybrid transmission, freshly built at time of conversion, 20k miles on the trans. 14+ qts of AMSOil Synthetic Fluid.
  • 1997 4D34 Mechanical injection pump, fueling increased.
  • Compound turbo setup with the stock Mitsubishi 14B and a Holset HX35 Turbo, running 30lbs of boost.
  • Water to Air Intercooler Setup
  • 3.5" Stainless Steel Exhaust, Side Exit
  • Air Conditioning WORKS
  • MAF 38 Gallon Long Range Tank (600+ mile range, easily)
  • 1/2" Aluminum fuel line to water separator
  • OEM Fuel Feed used as return
  • ALL Oem Gauges Work, including tach
  • Autometer Sport Comp II Boost and EGT Gauges, with warning lights.
  • Hand Throttle
Drivetrain/Brakes
  • At time of engine install, factory lockers and lift were installed. Bought complete Locker Axles from a junk yard with 88k (odometer confirmed) miles on them.
  • Birf/Bearing service completed using AMSOil Greases and Oil, front and rear, and OEM parts from CDan.
  • DBA Gold Cross Drilled/Slotted Rotors F&R
  • All NEW OEM Brake Hoses, including extended OEM hoses for lift.
  • 100 Series front pads
  • 80 Series rear pads
  • New OEM E-Brake Cable
Suspension/Tires
  • Ironman Lift, 2.5", Heavy Load Rear Springs, MAF 30MM Spacers up front to level the rig, about 3-3.5" lift now.
  • MAF 3" Drop Brackets in front.
  • Custom Swaybar Extensions front and rear.
  • American Racing AR-23 16.5x9.75 Wheels, these HAVE A SAFETY BEAD
  • Goodyear Military OZ 37x12.5 tires, balanced with BBs.
Other
  • Scion Head Unit
  • Off Road Lights on custom bumper bracket
  • All Cloth Interior
  • New Windshield and gasket within the last year
  • Two new OEM Key Fobs
The Good...

This rig regularly gets 19-21MPG on the 37s. The WORST tank I've gotten since the conversion is 18MPG while TOWING another Fuso box truck. (8000lb Trailer) The truck is very capable off road and comfortable on road. It is daily driven and has never left me stranded anywhere since the conversion. If you are looking for an everyday use extremely capable rig, this is your truck.

If you ar ein NJ, this truck is Emissions Exempt!!! Since we no longer have safety inspection, DMV told me to scrape the sticker off the window and call it a day... never go to inspection again!

The Bad... (There is always bad)

"Park" does not work in the transmission. I did not extend the park rod in the trans far enough. While it exgaged on the bench during assembly, it engages in the truck but does not hold. I have used the parking brake since install, it is habit now. Fixing this requires a fair amount of labor and never bothered me enough to warrant it.

This is not a show truck, it has a fair number of redneck pinstripes, damage to the rear quarter that was repaired by the previous owner, but shows. There is very minimal rust, but it is not a southern truck. I have repaired a couple spots, there is nothing visible anymore. Absolutely no rot, the frame and axles are clean.

The AC works, but the factory amplifier is bypassed, so you need to be mindful when sitting in traffic that the pressures can creep. This is not a huge deal, you will hear the belt start to squak and just hit the AC button to kill it until you're moving again. I tried three different amplifiers in an attempt to get it to work like the factory and gave up.

There is no cruise control.

The cargo area has a lot of staining, I used this as a truck, hauled engines, transmissions, concrete bags, you name it in the rear. Again, not a show truck.

UPDATE (10/22/12):

I have had a tremendous amount of interest in this truck, with many many asking about inspection and registration information, and a lot of questions about the park issue with the trans.

First, registration and inspection:
I can not speak for any regulations in any state other than NJ.
In NJ...

There is NO DIFFERENCE between registration cards for a Gas Powered Vehicle and a Diesel Powered Vehicle.
There is NO DIFFERENCE between titles for a Gas Powered Vehicle and a Diesel Powered Vehicle.
I spoke to representatives at my local DMV and also called the state CMV to verify this.

The ONLY difference in NJ is vehicle inspection. 1996 and older diesel passenger vehicles are EXEMPT from emissions inspection!

What vehicles do not have to be inspected? Vehicles that do not have to be inspected include:
• Motorcycles
• Diesel-powered, passenger motor vehicles plated as passenger, not-for-profit, governmental, commuter van, farmer or farm truck, with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 8,501 to 9,999 pounds, regardless of model year.
• Diesel-powered, passenger motor vehicles plated as passenger, not-for-profit, governmental, commuter van, farmer or farm truck model year 1996 and older with GVWR 9,999 pounds or less.
• Diesel-powered trucks plated as commercial, passenger, not-for-profit, governmental, commuter van, farmer or farm truck with a GVWR of 10,000 to 17,999 pounds (self-inspected under NJAC 13:20-26.16).
• Vehicles registered as “farm use” or “farm tractor.”
• Collector Vehicles (Odometer and credential verification at Centralized Inspection Facility).
• Historic Plates (QQ)
• Trailer
• Mopeds


That being said, when my inspection sticker expired, I was instructed to SCRAPE IT OFF and NEVER INSPECT AGAIN. I keep a copy of the above document with the applicable line highlighted in my glove box in the event that I get stopped by a law enforcement officer. This has not happened yet.


Second, the transmission.

Please understand, that in other markets, the 80 came with a manual transmission. The parking brake in our market and these markets are the SAME. It is designed to hold the truck in place, even on inclines. The way I have driven my truck is essentially treating it like a manual, I use the parking brake to park. This is why I replaced all of the parking brake components. My wife drives this truck and parks it all the time, it has never rolled away on her. She is not a car person by any means.

That being said, in the coming weeks, I will be repairing the park issue with the trans. This is simply to resolve this issue for any potential buyer.

After this is repaired, the truck will go on eBay.

What would it take to fix the park in the tranny?

Remove transfer case, remove extension housing, work some magic on the extension rod that engages park, put it back together. The rod needs to be 1/4" longer than it currently is.



Bumping this up one last time before I fix the trans and put it on eBay. The truck did my family real well this week getting us through the mess that was superstorm sandy. My area is pretty devistated, this truck needs to go.

House was pretty trashed by hurricane sandy and the insurance isn't covering it, could really use the money from this truck...

For my asking price I will include a second complete running (longblock, injection pump, PS pump, alternator, starter, turbo) 4D34 Engine, two spare ECUs, a spare set of injectors, and a spare core injection pump.

I have no fixed park in the trans yet, but that can be negotiated.

I will do my best to answer your questions...

How is the drive compared to stock 80 series as far as acceleration is concerned?

My cruiser will out-accelerate a stock cruiser with ease, and I would think it could outrun a TRD SC'd 80 series as well, although I have never driven one to compare against for sure.

How does it perform in low range in off road situations?

It performs just as well if not better than a stock cruiser. There is so much torque available in third gear that a light throttle application is sufficient to spin all 4 tires when on a loose surface.

Can cruise control be added to this set up?

Yes! I have all of the necessary parts, I just have not gotten around to it yet.

How are power windows working on this cruiser?

They all function, but are slow in the winter.

Are all gauges accurate?

Yes, there is a yellowbox speedo correction on the speedometer, the coolant temp and oil pressure sendors were transferred from the toyota engine, the tachometer is 10% off, but good enough to get an idea what the engine is doing. The fuel gauge works, but for some reason is slow coming back up after a refill ever since I installed the long range tank. The voltmeter works perfectly, all idiot lights function properly, and I added a glow plug indicator light as well as a high-EGT warning light that can be set at an user defined level (currently at 1300*F)

Any overheating issues ?

None whatsoever, the electric cooling fan is controlled by a thermostatic switch and functions autonomously.

Any motor or tranny or diff leaks?

Yes, the rear main seal leaks. I have a new seal and plan on installing it next weekend (not this weekend) when I repmedy the park situation in the trans

Do lockers work as factory?

Yes, even thought the truck was not factory equipped with lockers, it is wired up and functions exactly like stock with all stock components.

Center diff lock switch?

Yes, but no pin-7 mod

Does tranny shift smoothly, etc?

The transmission shifts perfectly smooth and functions flawlessly.





Also, I just purchased some lightly used 315/70-17 BFG All Terrains and FJ Cruiser Steelies. I will be installing them on the truck this weekend and taking updated pictures.
 
Only reason it's not in my driveway is beacaue I still have a cruiser I need roger rid of first to make room!

After reading the entire build thread, I am amazed this truck hasn't sold yet.

If I had the luck and patience (to deal with California registering it which I believe is possible), the time (to bring it out here), and the space (I'd need to sell my 40 first), I would be all over it. This truck has basically everything I could want in an 80 series.
