Trip Report:
Me, BillRiley, my son Andrew, and a cord of firewood piled in Bill's 80 and headed out of Memphis about 5:00 a.m. Once on the highway, I noticed that Bill's truck has a slight vibration, but attributed that to his motor mount that was welded shut a few trips back. Not wanting to hurt Bill's feelings, I kept my mouth shut.
We rolled into Corinth, MS and for the first potty break and ate breakfast at the fanciest McDonalds I have ever seen.
Getting in and out of the truck, we get a taste of what the weather will be like. The wind was blowing hard, it was probably 25 degrees, and without our camping clothes on we freeze just making the 10 foot run to the door. We get back on the road just as the sun is starting to come up.
Fast forward a few hours and we pull into Jasper about 10:00 and meet up with the now much smaller than anticipated group at Andy's shop. We take advantage of the indoor plumbing and then head for the trails, which are only about ten minutes away.
Around lunchtime, we pull up to the same campsite that we used last year and decide to drop our hundreds of pounds of firewood, set up our tents, and get some lunch warmed up. We start a fire and get the camp ready for our return later in the day.
It is cold and the fire is warm, so we hang around for a few hours before getting back on the trail.
We made our way toward the overlook and ended up getting there about ten minutes before sunset.
After that we dropped Elbert off at the highway nearby, and made an interesting night run back to camp.
We get back to camp with no problems. Now it's a little colder, but the wind has died down, so it wasn't too bad. We stick my son in a sleeping back in a chair by the fire so he doesn't freeze solid and get our dinner ready.
We manage to make it through the night without freezing, but our food and water didn't fare so well. Everything... contacts, water bottles, the dutch oven full of chili, box of wipes, etc. is frozen solid. Like I said earlier, the only stuff that didn't freeze was in the coolers.
As we are packing up, six or seven more local trucks pull into camp and we all head back out toward the exit at Tracy City.
While the big trucks were playing, we checked out Air Conditioner Cave...
After that, Andy guides us out of the trails and directs us to civilization. Once on the road, we notice that the vibration in Bill's truck has gone from bad to worse. We suspect that a ujoint is bad, or that we dented the driveshaft on the trail.
Roger's shop is on the way home, and not too far away. We stop by to check things out and sure enough, one of the u-joints in the rear driveshaft is shot. It's a good thing we stopped when we did, as it looked like it wasn't going to last much longer. Bill pulled the shaft so we could run home in front wheel drive.
BTW, did y'all know that Roger drives a Jeep ???
We chit chat with Roger for a bit and check out his wagon project before heading back out. We made the rest of the trip in front wheel drive, much smoother than before.
We had a blast and can't wait to come back, cold weather or not!
