new third upper brake light, would you add a strip of silicone?

Has anyone just filled in the brake light hole with the trim piece for under the spoiler? Looks like a way cheaper replacement option.

@LateOnTheBrakes as a fellow "L8T BRKR"...I'd highly recommend something functional.
Ebay has quite a few cheap (China) OEM fit replacements.
I also added an inline flasher while the 3rd brake light was removed, as I really wanted people to see I am on the brakes.
Exterior grade, Clear silicone sealer helps eliminate any water ingress and the Chinese product was not nearly the quality/fit of OEM Toyota (to be expected for the cost savings). Hope this helps!
$20-40 for the China 3rd brake light (eBay)
$10 for the flasher (Amazon)

Anyone contemplating an eBay Chinese knockoff needs to know the exact dimensions regarding the mounting tab spacing. While I guess there are some that "fit", the one I purchased wasn't even close. It's sitting somewhere in my garage...I ended up purchasing an OEM unit off eBay sold out of the United Arab Emirates for considerably less than locally.

I cleaned the foam adhesive off my original third brake light and hatch then resealed with butyl rope. Its been dry for a few years now.

@Greenbean , it was a struggle getting all the old stuff off.
This is just what I've been looking for! I have the cavity cleaned of old silicone and original foam gasket remnants on the LX470 and I am ready to install my new third brake light tomorrow. I am wondering if it advisable to do as you did here and remove the foam gasket from the new light and seal it, otherwise, properly? I am leaning toward removing the foam gasket, but wanted to see how folks have handled this.

6 years later and still no leaks for me. @2001LC, you've probably used butyl on a few 100s, any issues on your end?

I foolishly used the cheap ebay knockoff light backed up by clear RTV in 2018 after coming across this thread. That light split vertically and I opted for a replacement OEM using a sale and free shipping code. I forgot just what a PITA getting that RTV off would be along with whatever OEM residue I gave up on this last time. No bueno.
Took my rig to my body shop today and they are cleaning it up and taking care of any potential rust spots for sixty bucks. Money well spent if I can get another 246k out of her!
