New Seat Belts

So I spent a little time this afternoon, after repairing the drivers power seat on my wife's 80 series, on the seat belts. They will bolt up just fine on the DS. Attaching the retractor to a bolt on the tub, pivot point to the roll bar and anchor point to the seat rail. The console side attaches just like the factory belt.

The PS is a little more entailed. You can make it work but the cover over the gas tank hose is in the way so the retractor can't be mounted the same as the DS. It can be done in a different location but since I like to fab stuff up...... I decided to make a plate for both sides so the install would look better.

I wound up cutting some 1/8" plate that I will mount to the inner edge of the tub. This will allow the retractor to mount up and the gas tank hose cover won't be an issue. The PS AND DS will match when complete and be attached at 3 points on the tub. Much sturdier and will look good as well.

I will finish them tomorrow and post pics.

So here are some pics of the almost finished HUMMER seat belt install. I say almost finished because it was too cold to paint the brackets.

Stellar work. How is the retraction action? No sticking, and if you yank it (giggity) does it hold? One would not want to go into the windshield...

Works great... No sticking and yes it holds like a new seat belt.

I like em so well, I just ordered another set to replace the worn and ragged belts in my 78.

Hey thanks for posting these up, I've been wanting some safer belts in my 40. Not too hot on the old school lap belts.

I just got mine, sent a message to SportsmansGuide about them, but I'm wondering if mine are defective or If I need to do something too them. The mechanism won't release. I can feed the belt in, but not out. It locks up immediately. Anyone else have this issue?

Have you mounted the retractor or just holding it in your hand? Once it's mounted....bolted into place...it should operate correctly. I don't know why it is like that but several reviews referred to that as well.

Mount it up and see if it works.

I believe that gravity has something to do with release. Try holding it vertical, as in mounted position?

Got it working, The little ball was stuck. Oiled it and they work well, they are very sensitive to angle. Which is good, they will stay locked in a roll.

Bought and installed some of those off eBay as well. I already had an L bracket at the bottom of my roll cage from the prior (actually crapier) 3 point belts that were in it. Installed really quickly and I am happy with the build quality.

So you didn't have to drill into the tub there are existing holes there? Looks really nice good job! May have to consider doing this at that price...
No drilling on tub required. My tub has the typical welded nut-backed threaded holes all along the tub. I just fabbed up a piece of 1/8" plate, drilled 3 holes to match the tub and 2 more for the retractor, and it works perfectly. Brand new seatbelts for CHEAP.

I'll provide my update:
My OEM belts are out for re-webbing and cleaning up. The lady told me, my retractors had a broken plastic part. It is the part that locks the belts, and that she would see if her helper could re-fabricate this part using a 3D printer......A month when by, and she couldn't seem to get this done.

Thus I bought a set of the Sportsman's Guide seat belts for their retractors, so I could swap my OEM clasp and guides on them. That way I could still use the OEM buckles. I received my new seat belts in a 18" X 10" X 7" box (+/-), along with almost enough scrap metal in bolts/brackets/washers & rivets I could sell to pay for them. However, one of the plastic housings was broken. Called Sportsman's Guide they offered a full refund, swap or credit.

The same day I received my new belts, the Lady refurbishing my OEM belts called and said they finally had the plastic part reproduced and that my OEM retrctors are working as designed. So my original Toyota seat belts will be re-worked, re-webbed and re-installed.

As for some tech, I will say The Sportsman's Guide seat belts seemed to be well made and wouldn't hesitate to use them if needed. I would have keep them, but I don't need three full sets of seat belts.....Back goes the Sportsman's Guide seat belts for some store credit, since they were very easy to work with. And heck, what Outdoors Person doesn't like the Sportsman's Guide.

Package from Sportman Guide received yesterday - anyone considering....gotta tell you for the money i was super happy with the quality (sor far). The package comes with all these military spec parts and pieces specific to a humvee instalation. Kinda cool. Most wount be relavent but I may try to incorporate some of these parts in..but we'll see. I'll post pics after i finish the fabrication. If you cant have OEM parts (for me) this military spec parts are super cool.
I was curious what some of extra parts were so i did a google search (i think humvee seat belt instalation) - found a PDF file right away and shows all the mystery parts and where they install. For the curious out there.....fyi. :D
