My 76 FJ40 has only ever had lap belts and the wife hates them. She says she wants something safer and more secure like the modern 3 point seat belts.

I've looked around and was about to buy some from a Landcruiser vendor when I saw some for sell through Sportmans Guide. They are military surplus HUMMER seat-belts. Instead of close to $200 that I was about to spend they only cost $26! I thought it was worth trying....

UPS dropped off a box that weighed about 20 lbs and it's my seatbelts. They came with all kinds of stuff to make them fit a HUMMER, extra hardened bolts, and other stuff you don't need. And for only $26..... I am amazed. They look almost identical to the OEM belts in my 78 FJ40.

The only problem I see is the anchor point for the retractable part does not exist on my 76 rollbar. Looks like I may need to find a later model rollbar with the anchor point or fab up an anchor point to weld on the existing one.

Has anyone done this? Have any suggestions? Thanks!

The stock mounting points are on the hardtop.... But when I've taken the hard top off, the retractor gets mounted to a spare bolt on the tub rail, and the pivot goes to the lower one bolt of two on the rollbar connection...

Ok. I was looking at possibly mounting the retractor to the tub rail. Is it sturdy enough there? And does it operate properly from that point?

If so, this may be an easier upgrade than I first thought.

It works alright... The mount holds the retractor vertical, and the belt does a slight angle up to the shoulder pivot. The small tab on the back of the retractor interferes somewhat with the mount, on the hardtop mount there is a slot for that tab... Try it out and adjust to your preference.

I could see that. I may do a little fab work and make a piece that will fit there and allow for the tab and all to line up right. Thanks!

If it's not to much trouble to ask, could you post photos of how it looks and the mounting points?

I will when I get it finished. It may be a few days though.

78, seat belts mount to my roll bar.
They mount to the roll bar in my 78 as well. It's my 76 that doesn't have the seatbelt mount on the roll bar. I wish it did!

Smoking deal! Thanks for the link......
Just wait until you get them. There's almost enough parts in the box to build your own Hummer... Haha.. But yes... It is a great deal on a set of seat belts...

I'm buying them for the retractors and new webbing, so I can swap out my OEM clasp and guide....Great time for this thread!!!! Many-many thanks!

In the US market the 76 model started with lap belt and switched to three point in 1/76. Prior to that they were seat mounted lap belts. My 10/75 76 model only has lap belts. The threaded hole at the top started in 73 but the bottom bracket started 1/76 and ran thru the 77 until it moved to the roll bar with the 78 model. The hard top brackets continued in other markets that did not get a roll bar.

6-7-8 subtle differences... I wonder how well the latch mounts up at the floor - console side?

Got mine from CruiserCorps very happy with them, new 3 point belts.

Thx for the link...I have been wanting to put 3 point belts in the 1970...this got me going and I ordered a set last night! Better be good! :-)

When I first put in Three point belts into my 74, I used a piece of angle iron attached to two of the roll bar mounting bolts to mount the recoil. Later I picked up a newer roll bar that had the mount welded higher. I then moved the angle iron to the back of the truck and added three point belts on the rear bench seat.

CCOT's kit uses a similar angle bracket to mount the belt to one of the roll bar mounting bolts.

Those Hummer belts look like a good deal... I almost ordered two sets, until I factored in shipping, and exchange... I think I'll wait till I'm not paying close to $1.50 per USD.
