I can not speak for the FJ40, but I can tell you I drove a 100% stock out-of-the-showroom FJ70 for 10 years and went to places you won't ever think of taking your 4R or future FJCrapper without braking anything or getting any body damage. I got stuck a couple of times though.

BTW, it was also my DD

That's why I didn't mention the 60/70/80s... :) With the options you could get on them from the factory, they were tanks off the assembly line.

Not really too worried about body damage. Hell, I've gotten more body damage in parking lots from other vehicles than I have on trails.

Here are some spie shots of the FJC being tested.

Doesn't have a date on the photos, but what I find interesting is if these are relatively new spie photos, why the camoflauge?? There are pictures of the FJC on the Toyota website that 'appears' to be close to production.

It could be that there is still something that is going to change between what we've seen and what will be available.

Can't tell too much from the photos if the rear quarter window has gotten bigger.

I dig these black wheels:

I think that AutoSpies picture is probably hiding the real production version of this. In those pictures there is a bulge on the rear of the vehicle just left of the spare tire. It would appear to be the latch handle for opening the back, which would mean the rear would open to the right, which is different from anything we've seen so far. In the original prototype and in those 'wheeling' pics, the rear door opened to the left and the handle mechanism was on the right, where the license plate was mounted.

So my guess is those autospies pictures are quite recent, and are showing (or hiding actually) the final true-production vehicle.

To me, it looks like that bulge is just the hinge, seen in the other pictures.

To me it would make the most sense for the door to hinge the same way as it did in the proto pictures, as that would allow you to open it away from a curb you would pull up alongside, making loading and unloading easier.

I know my Disco opened the way you described, Mark, and it always got on my nerves. It was designed for a left-road drive market, though, so it was correct for it's originally intended demographic.

Those upper bulges are in the wrong place for a latch, and the right side of the truck is in shadow. Look at the other pic and you can see an equal size upper bulge on the right side of the left truck, but slightly lower down, even with the tail light. Those are probably just pads under the cover or something. This is getting kind of silly.

I'm just kind of curiously excited about how much the rear is camoflauged. If these photos are recent, they normally wont go through that much trouble to obscure a design feature everyone has already seen on the protos.

Maybe some focus group work has told them they need to redesign the most aesthetically unpleasing part of the exterior? It's probably just the camo, but it looks as if the rear of the roof doesn't slope down as much as the proto did.

I'll see it a month from tomorrow, I guess.

As a side note, I'd bet there are a few vendors (Spectre or TLC, most likely) who already have a production version in house. One thing Toyota always has in their SEMA booth when they are showing a new vehicle is modified versions of that vehicle alongside it.

Maybe they are attempting to hide a removeable hard top....

Let a guy dream will ya.

My guess is that the rear tire now swings away to offer access to the flip up window. You heard it here first...... :D

I'm also thinking they are going to offer the removeable top along with a split rear access door.

Notice the White paint line in the above pic. They're not horizontal.

Now look at the pics taken at TTORA Takeover. The white line of the roof is obviously horizontal, no divergence what-so-ever. Damn it, I can't post the pic, but heres the link: Notice the lines

I'm with MA557.

I think it'll have a removeable top. Thats been my biggest bitch about it all along. I think they may have smartened up!

God, I hope so!!

The pictures you refer to are of the concept FJ Cruiser, built in 2002/3 with the old Tacoma drivetrain, the other pictures with the non-horizontal line are the actual pre-production vehicle, as seen on the new pictures on the Toyota website. I definitely prefer the old (original prototype) roof line, but it looks like they are not going to look that :(

Ah, F-Truck, don't bust my bubble!

I'm trying to be hopeful, you think they'd change the front roofline mounts or sections for any other reason?

I'm just trying to justify the possibility.

Thanks,

Doug

Naa, I think you can see the hinge though, now that I look more...but the thing I pointed at is definetly a box of some sort. Could just be padding for the black stuff, although why pad that area, nothing else is padded. It doesn't look the right place for a latch though, I will agree (too high)...maybe a out-cropping from the inside for a firstaid kit or something.

Oh man a removable hard-top would be sweet..and it would really cut into the Wrangler sales I think...as much as I hate the Wrangler, the whole removable top things is pretty darn cool, and you can buy one of those new, not like a old beatup 40...so yeah a removable top would be nice.

If the FJC came with a removeable top, I would without question buy one.

I'd ask no questions about the lockers, SFA, Pillars, Interior or anything else.

Come on 12...........Ooops, I meant Toyota. I'm in gambling mode, leaving in 8 hours for a Casino in the caribbean. Sorry.

:)

from what I just read in Motor Trend, the 2x4 version will have a limited slip, the 4x4 will have traction controll..........betting no locker

I'll bet there is a locker as well as traction control, just like on the Taco TRD, all the lit says so, as well as the most recent pictures.
