96 fj80 locked, low and slow

Edit.... guess it's turning in to a slow build thread so changed the name.

factory locked

low i hate big lifts. ran 40" tires on my Jeep CJ with about a 2" lift and 16" of travel. been there done that the whole rock crawling thing. if i go back it will be with a buggy. jeep got to dedicated and wanted to get a daily driven capable rig going.

SLOW... well slow build, slow vehicle... wouldn't trade it for anything.

back to the original posts.

hey everyone. posted a few times trying to figure out some of the in's and out's.

will try to get pics but I have been a webshots user for years and they will be no more for the free users, and forum post users. and that's about all I have used them for.

bought a 96 fj80 dark blue and gray about two weeks ago. 228k and no real history.

have put 33's and steel rims on it and striped the running boards off. will be putting a 1-1.5" body lift to help accommodate a diesel swap in the next year. picked up some airlift bags to put in the rear and looking for 2" medium spring for the front for now.

end goal 20+ mpg expedition/daily driven rig. I enjoy building just as much as driving so it will take some time and I build it all myself.

order of items to add.
body lift
front bumper w/winch
sliders
(maybe rear bumper)
4bt cummins Diesel - shooting for next spring/summer
lift accourding to where it needs to be for the diesel
rear bumper for sure at this point
35-36" tires

now i need to get back to reading and reading and reading....... tons of info on this forum. thank you

oh ya and i need to replace a birfield. just need to figure out which one to buy.

With full time 4wd and longs also recommend part time conversion. But the 80 forum is more knowledgeable than my web wheeling info. Good luck with project and a silver star lets u post photos.

Sent from my phone using IH8MUD

There was a beautiful blue 80 with a 4bt, 35's and arb bumper on Craigslist a couple weeks ago but I think it was a scam.

Sounds like a great project. I have a friend in Baldwin city that does VW and cummins tuning if u need some injection pump work

I pm'd u on my birfield I have

Good luck!

here are some pictures. the hay bail picture is kind of an inside deal with my friends so i had to do one with the new cruiser just slightly smaller. included the original with my jeep to make it make since. running boards are off now and found rust. oh well i guess it's a 16 year old vehicle. it's all under and behind stuff for now. so i should be able to slow it down for a few years.

What brand are those black rims in the middle picture?

I got them second hand but pretty sure there all the same renamed. american racing or crager rock crusher style black. there 16x8 with 0 offset i believe. the rear fit great the front I had to put a 1/4" spacer to clear the caliper. i might actually have trouble with a new set of pads. the calipers are very close to the spokes

It's been a while since adding an update. Been slowly working on things. Got the body lift done and traded for different set of tires and decided to get some M/T alloy rims for it. Also just painted the bumper I have been working on for the last month or so off and on will have to take some pics once in stalled next weekend

sweet work. Man, I am looking forward to seeing that on the rig.

got it mounted still trying to decide for the inserts on the bottom left and right to go with a brushed aluminum or paint them some color. maybe a flat black to create some contrast. also want to add a set of fog lights. need to find a set so i can figure out where to mount them. I am thinking a little round projector style so i can hopefully hide them a little. While I like lights i don't want them to be the focus on the front end.

Is that the third set of rims on this rig?

Ya I have had a problem for some time. People thought it was over it when I got ride of of my jeep. Little did they know it has just progressed into the next stage.

2 door conversion....Weld rear doors shut - 1 hour

Diesel engine....does a hot dieseling engine with a little oil burning count - Done (not real;y)

Right hand drive.... some extended brake lines sprocket and a chain for the right hand wheel 3 hours

Part-time 4WD.... saw and center diff lock - 20 min

being able to let down my guard to over fill the tires fare enough to not get traction on that would just be over the line and unacceptable ;)

I've been there and done that a two door is just not worth it once you start thinking about family and a dog.
