5 1/4” are plenty in the front. Not even worth messing with. Get a small sub and adjust it to a wider range and it will sound unbelievable.
Maybe the rear grills can just be scaled up to cover 6 1/2’s or even 6x9’s.
That would look cool.

I finally got around to figuring out the rear speakers. As with the front, the idea was to figure out how to make as factory as I could. Yes, it's a little over the top, but whatever. It's all set up now and sounds great. Very happy to have rear speakers! All files and notes HERE.

It would be best to put the rear speakers in the rear doors but I wasn't going to mess with that. To minimize cutting and messing with factory stuff I mostly used factory mounting points. I also don't love the idea of cutting the rear panels so I took a few steps to make sure I did it right.

These first four photos show the mounting of the bracket. This bracket is made for a Polk 525 which is the same speakers I used up front. I only show the left side but both sides are identical. Three of the bolt holes are factory and one hole is drilled. The bolts are M6.

For the speaker grills, I drew up the front grills in CAD and printed the copies. They sound good up front and look factory so I figured that would be a good solution.

I painted them with Rustoleum 2X "ultra matte slate". The color is a tiny bit lighter than the vinyl but in person, you really can't tell. It's crazy close. I didn't sand them at all. Just a few coats of primer and then a few coats of color. Even though the 3D prints are a little rough, they look factory from anything but 6 inches away.

I ended up printing a bracket that holds are Sharpie in the exact center of the speaker hole. This might be overkill but I didn't want to mess up when cutting the side covers.

With the Sharpie in place, I mounted the side cover and the little black dot left behind was used to locate the center of template. I 3D printed the template but this could be easily printed on paper. After some careful cutting and vinyl gluing the panels were done.

The grills mount with four button head M3 X 6 screws from the back. The screws self tap into the grill.

The speakers mount with #8 sheet metal screws and I ran the wiring with the loom that runs down the left side of the truck. The side panel snaps back in place and the speaker is right up against it. I was worried about rattling, but there is none.

Oh, while I had the covers off I also sprayed some cosmoline (CRC marine rush inhibitor) in the lower parts of the rear quarter panel. I figured water could get trapped in there and I've seen rust there on other FJ60s.

Happy to answer any questions. Thanks all!

Interested in fabbing/selling a kit for the rear? I'll buy!

This is just awesome. Thank you @coultl so much! I've been able to use the .stl files you put up on dropbox to adjust and print new front door speaker grilles.

My speaker openings had been hacked open to be larger some time ago, so even if I was able to find an OEM replacement speaker grille in decent condition, no way were they going to fit. Adjusted your .stl file for the size I needed, and voila, nearly perfect new grilles.

For those looking, reminder that the files are here: 3D Printer Files by coultl

These files are awesome! Thank you so much @coultl! I finally have a radio in my truck now; love the bracket and plate (non-HC)!

waiting on the sniper filter brackets.

Great idea and super cool others are able to use the file to print their own. I’m actually going the other direction and reinstalling my factory radio. Any chance that you guys who installed these still have the two small OEM metal brackets that you removed? I’m looking for some, PM me if anyone has some.

So happy to find this thread. My Cruiser had a Walmart stereo (not hooked up) and some crappy oversize Kicker speakers (also not wired) when I got it.
Thanks to your parts and your guide, I'm super-confident that I will have a quality system that looks like it belongs there.

By the time the stereo and speakers arrive, I will have everything printed and the grilles painted.

I had an Alpine mech-less stereo in my Amazon cart, but I'm thinking a Sony might look more at home.

Printing everything in black ASA on my enclosed Ender 5 S1. Will let you know how it turns out!

Quick question: how do the speaker grilles attach? I'm not seeing it.

Since I am printing stuff, I better get busy and design a switch panel to fit in the cubby below the stereo. I have a handful of Carling switches for the off-road lights on my roof rack and bumper. Will post a SW model and STL when I get it done.

I mounted the grills with short M3 X 6 button head bolts. They just thread directly into the 3D print. More than strong enough.

Thank you for starting this thread , it's a neat place to share new ideas and also timeless original period correct ones using the modern materials , such as the 3-D media , and also making it with a purist based mind-set approach like many folks above have shown in good crisp Factory TRIM Code's #1 and #4 ... :)

- i approached the FJ60 Audio topic from a Period Correct OEM original point of view that involved a over-active and more the enthusiastic enthusiast's one as well

- i explored hard , the need to have the ability to have in-hand both very very good rust free examples of both the metal & a NOS or Perfect pre-owned Face Plate it-self .

- In efforts to create both the means to mechanically install and secure on of the various several different Part # OEM Toyota Tuner Pegs equipped ( AKA ; Munchkin-size-spec-tuners ) Radios Toyota offered Globally AM and AM / FM , those also came both 12V and 24V versions too ...

- using a very traditional molding process , that was created from the NOS one , i was Humbled to be granted permission to use on loan , to finally do what i had been dreaming for many years to make the 82611-90A00 / 82612-90A00 & 55513-90A00 alive once again ...

Excellent work my friend. Thanks again for putting your work out here!

I changed up the bracket just a bit. I'm a mechanical engineer so I can't leave well enough alone.
Added some vertical ribs and changed the strap to 20mm instead of 15mm. Plastic is cheap, why not.

The ASA grilles and faceplate came off my printer last night. The bracket is printing now. The template and sharpie holder are printing on my other printer in PLA. I have a 3rd printer set up for TPU, and I posted a thread with some replacement bumpers that I drew up in SW.

ASA and ABS prints aren't as crisp as PETG, but more than good enough for my basket case on wheels.
If I can find some PETG in my stash, I may reprint the faceplate and grilles to see how they compare.

To other members, I can print whatever you need for less than half the price of Xometry or whatever service you have in mind. Send a message if you need a part in this thread and I will get it done.

To anyone who doesn't have access to their own 3D printer, I have a different solution that's more affordable than going through a 3D printing 3rd party.
No dash or bezel removal required. Uses only existing hardware in your FJ60. Only made from ASA, a high temperature material thats x10 more UV resistant than ABS. Sold hundreds with no issues. Comes with easy installation instructions pamphlet.

Purely commenting on this to bring it to the top for many others, as this was the most comprehensive and guiding thread on aftermarket radio and speaker installs I've found thus far for those looking for that "OEM" look, which I sure am.

Thank you,

This is exactly what I want to do for my 60. Keep that factory look. For those of us without 3D printing capabilities any suggestions on where to get these printed ? I downloaded the files and just need to have the speaker mounts, grill and sharpie holder printed. Thanks for doing this! I have found more helpful friendly folks working with the Land Cruiser than any other car I've had.
