New Dome Lights based on George’s LEDs (Gauging Interest)

Scott,
I asked this question a few months back when you started this thread and I'm not certain of the answer. I have George's 1st gen domes and map lights. Was there a current draw comparison between those and the new ones you're selling?
I'm all for upgrading to the new versions, but I'd rather not kill a battery if one of my kids leaves a door open overnight.

Yeah George told me the current draw on these is approximately 100mA @ 12 volts. He said it's basically the same (at least within 10% one way or the other) as his LEDs.

I just got my LED and it is super bright and fantastic in the 93 LC but in the 2003 Tacoma that I had planned to put it in it flickers. It seems like it may be too long for the receptacle and I could only make it fit sideways. Do I need to trim a little off so it fits better or is there something going on in the circuitry of the Tacoma?? I don't know, as I'm no electrical engineer... I love the color and brightness of the new LED in the 80 so I really want to figure out how to make it work in the Tacoma!! Thanks!!

I think when you put it sideways the connection is too loose. You can always trim the contacts with tin snips if you have them. If not, send them back and I'll send you another one that fits properly. I assumed it would be the same size. My brother in law has a 2003 (I think it's 2003) Tacoma so I can set one up to fit properly for you.

I just saw on TacomaWorld.com that if the key is not at ACC position that it will only flicker, it is not getting enough power or something... I'm trying to research to see if anyone has any solution to this problem. Thanks for helping. I can always tin snip them, but I need to figure out if there is a way to make them work without the key being turned on. It's always nice to have a lot of light right when you open the door...:)

It looks like the fix is to put resistors on the bulb. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1s...me-light-led-bulb-actually-works-right-2.html
If you figure out anything using your bro-in-laws truck, let me know. I really want the LED in the Tacoma but don't really have the experience with soldering and resistors... If you can get it to work right let me know and I'll get another one. I'm gonna see if the one I got now will work in my 85 4runner. The dome fuse was blown tonight when I tried it so I'll have to get another fuse and see if it'll work. I'm sure you could get many of the first gen Tacoma owners to buy these as a lot of guys on that post were looking for a plug and play solution. Just let me know, thanks, Scott Shelley

Cool. I'm in for a set of all 3. I sent payment.

Scott,

Just installed the map light and the two domes.

For the map light:
Please consider making the two screw holes one size bigger. The screw gets hung on the lip and makes it difficult to align the mounting plate. The holes on the truck side are soft plastic and can not take stress. Basically George's mounting please could be used as a template.

Also, your mounting plate is a 1mm too big and at least mine was not cut straight. So one corner needs to be persuaded to fit.

This is not a cheap enhancement and I would prefer it to be a straight drop in.

No problem with the dome lights.

Have to wait for night to evaluate light quality, but I am sure no issues there

Rhyary sounds like you received a problem one as far as installation goes. I apologize for that. I'll have to have a strong word with the QA manager (me, d'oh!) to make sure that doesn't happen again!

Scott,

Thanks for doing this. I paid for a complete set. :)

Dome: $45
OEM Cargo: $45
Map: $52
Shipping (per order): $4

You ought to consider coming up with a solution for the 100 series. I have some cheap ones now but would appreciate a XPG, or even a XM-L option.

Thanks again

***What tail lights are you running and do you like them?

I fixed the dome light in the 85 4runner and the LED fit just fine and works really good! If you decide to fix one for the 2003 Tacoma let me know! I would really like one in their if you can make it work! Thanks, Scott

Hey greenseaman I think I have a solution for you! Check your PM.

I don't usually like to agree with Rami, but I was very disappointed with the map light. Aluminum base was too big to fit and holes were incorrectly positioned and drilled too small. Also, there is one LED where I had 2 with George's original design. Less than thrilled with this. I put George's back in.

Dome lights work as advertised and have a brighter appearance (tried in daylight) and more pleasing color temperature. I'll check them out tonight.

Scott, please ping me when you can. jon[AT]sdsysdesign[DOT]com.

Yeah Jon I'm really sorry about your fitment issues for the map light. I sent yours right before reading Rami's post about the base being too big and didn't have a chance to check it. I think your two were the only ones that were too big. I have heard no other reports.

As far as the number of LEDs go, I had Georges map light as well and thought it was too bright. I have seen others post this sentiment as well, so I decided to use just one LED in my application. Why don't you give it a try at night? You might think it's bright enough.

Anyway, no problem at all if you or anyone else wants to return anything for a refund.

Scott,

The fitment of my map light is fine and I had no issues with the install. I'm sorry to read a couple of the other guys are. I have George's 1st gen in my domes and the new map light appears to be a warmer light than them and works great!

Does anyone know if the 100 series takes the same size dome lights as our 80 series? I'm pretty sure they do.

Scott

Hey Scott,

Do your LEDs fit 1 on 1 for the dome lights of the 100 series ? I would really like to have them and not have to worry about the batteries running dry when using them during camping.

Thanks,
Niels
