I just received a new Toyota CV shaft from ToyotaPartsDeal.com... They just sent it in the same package that the part sits on the shelf, didn't bother to repackage it in something or bother to add packing... I could tell by the shape of the box, and the fact that it looked like someone had tossed it out of a moving truck, that it would be damaged, and it is.

Here are photos of the damage. I think I can file out the messed up spline, in order to get it on, but what about this dust shield?

Should I attempt to straighten this out with pliers or something, or just send this back and get a new part from somewhere else? When I buy a $350+ part, I expect better packaging/shipping.

Needless to say, I won't be buying from these folks again.

There's been other similar posts, the dust ring almost always get bent in shipping, most just bend it back into shape. Yours is definitely worse than others. As for the splines, you can get some fine files and work on that, should be fine.

Another good case if you're taking advantage of the SE Toy dealer sales for ordering from the places that know how to pack things for things like CVs and radiators as they are not meant to be shipped in their regular boxes.

i had the exact same experience with Toyotapartsdeal, amd my axle looked almost as bad. i sent it back for a refund, and i was refunded about 85% of my original payment. i gave up on trying to get the rest back. I take any chance i get to warn others not to purchase from that site.

Thanks for the quick replies, friends.

I need to get this thing back on the road, so I guess I’m going to try to repair this… how important is it to get that shield as close to original shape as possible? In other words, does it have to fit inside something, or does it just need to be cleared from the rubber seal?

To say I’m pissed off, is an understatement. I’ll be warning everyone about these dudes as well.

Yeah if you cannot wait, then sending it back is not really an option, is it? A detail file or a dremel abrasive wheel will correct the spline, and just one imperfect tooth won't affect the function. The collar looks really beat, but if it's malleable, work it back into some semblance of round.

From what I've read here [insertbrand]partsdeal.com is just an aggregator with little to no customer service. I tried buying Honda parts from the once. Once. Better prices and service from the SW dealers that regularly have %off sales, no predatory shipping. I've even had my local dealership price-match partsdeal.com. Not worth buying from them, as you have deduced.

I’ve got a large set of files, of all sizes and shapes, including some i got from a dentist.. and a few Dremel setups as well. I’m not too worried about the spline damage, but that dust ring/cover is pretty wonky. Hearing how crappy their return policy is kind of forces me into fixing this, if I can. I feel this is on me, for not searching and clearing these jackasses. Live and learn, they say.

I’m going to do my best to make this work, and try not to use my new Japanese swear words too often (I learned a few, so I could curse this thing in it’s own language).

ok... dust ring/shield is pretty much back in place. thought i would share my technique... using an adjustable wrench, work your way around.. using one of the undamaged portions as a guide. A bit more tweaking and it should be ok, i figure.

now to attack that damaged spline.

If this was a field repair on a used part I would not think twice about it. But it sucks paying $350 for the privilege of fixing a new part.

spline filed and cleaned. I'm gonna move ahead.

just check to make sure the drive plate slips over the splines before installing, incase it needs extra repair

what a fun afternoon. anyone know how to get a stuck tie rod loose? I have all the pullers one can imagine, can’t get any of them around it. gonna try heat a more ‘tapping’ with the BAH.

Makes the job much easier if you support the lower control arm in position with a jack before you start knocking the ball joints apart.

Most puller will not fit while brake dust shield on.

Although some will:
Parts stores, loan kits, with long arm pullers. Some of those work.
I customized this FTC-1258

Yes 2001LC is right. I also wound up modifying a puller to get it to fit with the brake dust shield on.

If you use the toyota recommended tool, or many others, you have to take off the brake dust shield, which requires removing the knuckle gasket, and the rotor. Way too much work if you're just replacing the outer tie rods.
