Update:

The truck is loaded into a container and en-route to the US!

While I wait for her to arrive, does anyone know what size the stock head unit and speakers are? I’d like to replace the stereo with something tasteful and useful since the existing radio doesn’t work and speakers are worn out.

I put 4" speakers in the dash spots, 3.5 might also fit better

Pair of 4” speakers in the dash. Most come with bendable mounting tabs and will fit in the stock location with the tabs bent. You can see just that in the above example from @CardinalFJ60.

Radio is a standard double DIN, or single DIN with either a pocket or some other aftermarket/3d printed single DIN filler/gauge panel.

If it still has the OEM radio, likely not needed, but otherwise you may find that you need the radio mounting brackets (86211-90K00 and 86212-90K00) and screws (4x 90159-50173).

Is the current radio AM only or AM/FM? Might be interested, even if it doesn't work. I have an AM/Cassette in mine but there was an AM/FM option. Congrats on getting it on the boat!

I have an AM/FM + tape single DIN OEM from my Troopy. Free to you if you can wait a few months until I go back to the USA…

Gosh that is a very generous offer; really appreciated. The only issue is that's it's for RHD so all the controls are reversed. Otherwise I would be all over it. Mine is a single DIN AM SWR Cassette but the Cassette doesn't work. There was an OEM AM/FM Cassette option but I haven't been able to find one, not that I have looked that hard.

Did you ever solve your temp gauge reading low topic? Mine does the same and my suspicion is either a ground or a poorly functioning thermostat. I’ll be checking my thermostat soon so I’ll keep you posted.

I have the AM/FM with tape deck. Not sure yet if I want to keep and try to fix or get rid of it it but you’ll be the first to know if I decide to let it go

No, I replaced the missing ground in the engine bay but no change. The thermostat is also brand new. Next stop will likely be troubleshooting the temp sender and see if that’s the culprit.

Two issues that I’ll be chasing down before I do too much driving around:

1) Rough idle until it warms up. When it first starts, it misses on 1-2 cylinders and runs very rough, then begins to smooth out as it warms up. I’m assuming this is an adjustment issue somewhere as it has new plugs/wires/distributor/coil.

2) It decided to greet me with a new oil leak today as a welcome home gift. I’m getting a fair amount of oil burning off on the exhaust headers, strong smell once it’s hot. Valve cover gasket looks fine, no visible leaks there. It appears to be coming from the area of the headers somewhere….maybe oil cooler? Weird it wouldn’t be leaking coolant though. It’s also strange that the *outer* down pipe stud has oil dripping off of it but not the inner one.

I have a 1992 FZJ75 which is very similar to your truck. For audio, i just did an upgrade you can see in the build thread I took over once I purchased my truck from @wngrog Link to thread is below. I’m about to add a jbl nano subwoofer too which I’ll add the details to the thread shortly.

Cheers, James

Mine was a bit rough at startup now it’s in the US but a a new set of plugs and an Italian tune up resolved this.

Man I've been tossing mine. Wish I had known you wanted one

I went through this on the last 80 I imported.

Hot weather thermostat. Every truck I've brought in the temp gauge runs low

No worries. Have any come in with AM/FM or have they all be AM only? I would be fine keeping my AM only unit if the Cassette worked. Obviously AM/FM would be better.

Awesome, thanks Nolen. Just picked up a new thermostat and gasket from the dealer yesterday. Any tricks on installing these? I've got extra coolant to in anticipation of loosing some when I open up the thermostat housing.

Make sure the jiggle valve is in the 12 o'clock position for install. It sits on the engine side groove in the thermostat housing.

Confirmed today while I had it up on a lift that the oil leak is coming from the oil cooler somewhere. It’s strange that I’m not getting any coolant leaking out alongside the oil, you’d think that would leak first based on the design. Will add that gasket replacement to my winter to-do list.

I also encountered a new issue today: intermittently while driving, my battery light and air filter light will light up, stay illuminated for a little while (anywhere from a couple seconds to maybe 45 seconds), then go out. This happens on and off while driving. Has anyone seen something like that before? Indicative of bad battery/ground?
