Well, the day has come where my knowledge is less than it should be regarding some home electrical work and I’m looking for some professional help. I have run all of the 4/1 wire from my primary 200 amp supply panel and have wired up a 120 amp sub-panel in my garage to power all my garage toys. I'm fairly confident that I know what I'm doing and have 99% of the work done, but after seeing a neighbor’s house burn down I feel I need guidance in hooking everything up in my supply panel. Anyone know of a good electrician that would be able to assist?

Sub-panel i went with in the garage. Like I said the wire is already run from the sub-panel to the supply panel. Just need to get that end hooked up.

i'm not afraid of hooking it up. I want to make sure when I'm hooking it up I do it correctly!

I cant tell from the picture but I am guessing the wires are color coded. The neutral should have a white line on it. in your main pannel the white will go to the neutral bar and bare will go to the ground bar and the two other wires will go to the 120amp double pole breaker. On most residential panels the neutral bar is bonded to panel and both neutral and ground wires will go to it. Hope that helps.

Had an electrician come out today and validated that i had everything hooked up perfectly. He only charged me a $40 service call fee because he didnt have to do anything. Worth it in the end to know that I got it all hooked up correctly. Now I have plenty of power to run what ever i want in the garage.

Is there no law against doing your own elec work even if your not a sparkie

You can do you own electrical work as long as you get a permit from the city and have it inspected by an electrician. I paid an electrician to validate my work. 6 years ago I would have never done that, but now having 3 kids and a wife its worth the $75 dollars.

When I built my house in Lenexa 10 years ago, I was able to do all the electrical and plumbing w/o any electrician or plumbers involved.

Wonder if that has changed......

Wow
That's seems crazy, but good for price value to the home owner so long as they know what to do.
I don't think I know of any sparkies who would sign off on someone elses work. But I guess that's got to do with the rules and regs in Aus.

:deadhorse: It would be kinda like requiring mechanics to do all the work on your vehicle. What's next, gotta hire a chef to come prepare your meals, licensed carpet cleaners to clean the floors? Just wait, the lobbyists have already tried the first.

As long as you follow the current version of the NEC, it's not rocket science, that's all the inspectors do, most of which have never worked as an electrician, plumber or whatever.

Way to go Zane, this will be the thread that never dies! BTW, you ran that exposed (insulated) wire through conduit right? :flipoff2:
