Need advice on a new gas range

Yep-That Thermador simmer thing works really well. You can slow cook on your range top if inclined. I suppose you're at the mercy of some circuit board in the machine, but it seems to work perfectly. I like that feature and the really hot star shaped burners.

If I could design from scratch, I'd also want a 24 x 24 flat top griddle.

One other thing-having a really powerful roof mount exhaust is great. All smoke and grease fumes leave the kitchen NOW. Unfortunately, you can't run the fan and have fire in the fire place at the same time. Don't ask how I know.

Regarding the refrigeration, in an ideal world they would be separate units. With an additional separate ice maker. I think I'm going with the Sub-Zero where at least the fridg and freezer have separate compressors kind of like a commercial unit. Not that happy about it though.

What size SZ are you looking at? The new IT36C is coming out next month. 36" Wx84"H. The BI42 and BI48 are not changing.

Bought the Sub-Zero BI-S 42 yesterday. It is supposed to be installed on Friday. No more Land Cruisers for awhile! If Samsung had made a 42 inch counter depth freestanding frig, I would have bought that, but the widest free standing frig I could find was only 36 inches.

For anyone who reads this thread, if you remodel your kitchen, I STRONGLY recommend you stay away from built in appliances. The fridg especially, triples in price if it's built in and it's 10x harder to remove and install. It isn't any better at being a fridg.

Update-I realize we are waaayyyyy off topic for John Vee's range problem, but...

While the Sub-Zero fridg is cruelly expensive, it is a better frig. Everything from the lighting, to the shelves to the way it makes ice, is better and faster. Temperature is extremely even. It is quiet. The filtered water thing seems like a gimmick, but it works. It even looks good. IT IS STILL NOT WORTH IT and no doubt 10 years from now I'll be pissed about it. For now, I'm OK. Just OK.

Do yourself a favor and make a freestanding frig work in your kitchen, no matter what.

Now for John Vee--You know, based on this experience, I would totally consider a Wolf Range. Go as big as you can fit. 36 inches is a minimum. You need the red knobs. Again, it is stupid money, but, it's something nice you will use every day of your life. But...no matter what your wife says or thinks or wants, avoid a built in refrigerator. There, I just saved you $7000, so go buy a nice range.

Well...in the relative comparison department: The GE Monogram (was the only brand package our builder was able to provide to us) 48" BI was about the same cost (2001)...actually more if you calculate the time period cost of money...as your Sub-Zero 42"BI Cruiserdrew. But with the overall construction and engineering differences, notably dual compressors, your purchase, more than likely, won't be a regret.

Relative to your new forty-two: Have you looked to see how easy/not the coils are to clean? Our GE Flopogram was a PITA to clean thoroughly (ditto for the matching gas range top)...

Nothing worse than spending big bucks and then regretting it. I'd much rather spend whatever with no regrets. After 2+ months of using our rental's 40-year old Thermadoor wall ovens (microwave is built in to the upper oven) and the 6 burner gas range top...they flat out outperform the newer GE Monogram in EVERY way. I'm impressed!

But after the experience of built in, especially all things refrigerator/freezer related, I 100% agree with you Andy to stay free standing when/if possible for best bang for the buck.

Okay, since I stirred it up a while ago suggesting Wolf ranges ( and we got black knobs to be different ;-) ), I'll do it again, check out these Leibherr fridge freezers:

We have friends that have them and they are fantastic! Pricey, but pretty much the best available....
