Zane: do mind sharing the cost of the the NL dual-battery kit? Also, did you move all of the factory accessories such as the cab lights, 12V outlets, etc. to the secondary battery (i.e. with the new fuse box)? Or is the new fuse box just for accessories you have added yourself?

Zane, excellent install, makes me want to redo my install, simply top drawer.

FATrabbit if you are interested in moving stuff to 2nd battery, I posted a while back on moving everything but starter motor to 2nd batt.

Installed my 24R Red Top Optima battery as my primary. I had to make a new chases ground wire. The one I had made was too short due to the terminals being a bit further away with the red top. Everything seems to be working correctly, so now its time to start hooking up accessories under the hood and running a line to the back of the rig... More to come!

Is that an air compressor mounted in front of your airbox?

So I received a National Luna dual battery kit for Christmas thanks to my wonderful wife (who must be an excellent listener)! I plan on doing the install in an upcoming weekend so I will be referring to this thread.

I do have one question: can the stock LC alternator provide adequate amperage to charge both batteries at the same time?

Sure it can.

Yep. Not a problem. I installed my Luna kit about a month ago. It was simple to do. Just take your time to lay it out nice and clean.

Here are the rankings from CR on group 35 batteries. I maybe getting a Bosche! While there are no Optima's in this group, CR did test some Optima and they were never choose as top picks or best buys.

The three categories are (from left to right): Life, Reserve Capacity and Cold Cranking Amps
Battery Ratings.webp

I wonder if there was a cost limit as all are under $100 except for one...and they only have the DieHard GOLD not the DieHard Platinum.

I still love my DieHard Platinum....great battery and over 1300 CCAs...

Which one do you have? The group 31M only has 1150, and its the biggest platinum they make.

DieHard Automotive Battery, Platinum P-5 - Group Size 35

It is what they recommend for my LX470....should be same for yours.

They say it is only at 750 amps on website there but when they ran the test after install he said it was showing almost 1300 when cranking....and that they are beasts...and are under rated and best for the money.

Maybe I misunderstood him but it spins my damn rig like a top when starting.

That makes more sense. Im gonna drop in a PM-1, which is a group 31M. There is a thread on here where a guy dropped it into the stock location, all he had to do was make the positive terminal about 2 inches longer. Should provide stupid amounts of CCAs and RC, im just waiting for my current battery to croak, damn thing keeps tricking me into thinking its done for.

Overland Journal did a write up this past year on batteries with their own independent test....rated the Sears Platinum as both Editors Choice and also Value Pick.

I am thinking the 800+/- CCA is right...and he was measuring just cranking amps when it was installed and warm...of 1300+. As they do the CCA test at 32*F for consistent readings...which makes sense.

The Overland Journal is Fall 2010 I believe...where Lois Pryce rides a Ural across United States with her husband in the side car. :)

I too am going with the National Luna set up.
Picked up a couple of reverse post 31M batts in the Reno Sears last week.
I need to lengthen the positive post for it to fit in the stock location- drops right in. The Hundy will have 31Ms for both batts. The Piggy has a yellow top for primary and will use another 31M for the secondary.

They did test some $100+ batteries in the Group 65 and Group 34/78 sizes.

Can someone explain this "lengthening" of the positive posts on 31Ms?! Is it easy to do?

/n00b question

$200 just seems crazy to me.

Anyone know how much an OEM battery runs?
