You run Nokian normally? I love those tires in mountain snow, didn’t know they did off road
Only set of nokians I've had. Got them at-cost few years ago. I can't complain about the one popping too much, it hit a nasty rock edge I couldn't see till I dropped down onto it. Same rock ripped off the fender flare and put a small dent on the inner fender lip. They have kevlar in the sidewalls but it wasn't enough. Have some chunking but holding up decent and seem to be doing well overall, but they are also my first MT tires. Summer only tires, they have zero siping and I would probably die driving with these on ice. The fact they are not common would lead me not to recommend, but happy otherwise. Not sure if there is a replacement MT coming to the US. I'll probably go with milestar patties when I upsize.

When I lived in the Mountains of New Hampshire and there in Minneapolis- I would run with Nokian because of the snow performance- and yeah, rocking horse sh$t is more common than Nokian

We had a great time!! lol. Including all the damage. It is expensive now that we are home...... Looking at 37's now, new wheels, sliders, etc, etc,..... lol

Front links too?

Truth. My 80 came with a set of General Grabber MTs on it. Foot of snow? NO problem.

Slight frost, death. Thank God the 80 is gutless AF

Chapter 37, Scared Of A Hole

My interior lighting was just zip tied to the rollbar. Today was the day to do it semi decent job making them more permanent.

Step one, "where's my hole:

Used a laser off the center of the ambulance doors and the rear view mirror to establish center. Then verified with a tape measure.

I'm running a light facing aft and one forwards. I could come think of a good way to transfer the mark to the front side of the rollbar, then I remember somebody using a hose clamp.
Worked well.

I needed a horizontal line. That one is easy. Eyeballed where I wanted the lights to sit on the bar, put witness marks on a piece of angled aluminum from a botched jig drilling project.

Drilled my mounting holes, and spent 10 minutes trying to fish the power lead through the roll bar down to the passenger side leg.

Wiring mess. I meant to get a picture of the actual connection, but I failed. Solder and heat shrink, and shove all the wires in the rollbar.

And installed

I drilled a hole towards the base of the rollbar and used a grommet to protect the wires.

Next project on my list is making the wiring in the console more serviceable.
I didn't know you can get plugs for Carling switches. Right now, it's a nightmare to take apart, I want to make it easier.

I did vegas gold powder coat to my internals - for what it is worth. decent match to the OEM pewter.

I ordered a couple of swatches to find what color I want. Ashtray, glovebox, fuel filler cover, and the access panel on the back door. All look to be original paint.

None of them are the same. 😆

I was actually shocked at how far off the Dakota Digital gauge bezel was to the glove box. In this picture, it looks super close though.
Under the data plate was in very good shape and hadn't seen the sun 48 years+

I'm also having a custom plate made for the glovebox for the 5spd and the tcase having 2lo.

I'm a little disappointed.
In myself and the ih8mud community.
I should've known about plugs for Carling switches long ago, and I found out about them very recently.

I bought a couple packs of the crimp on heat shrink type spade connectors today. A pack of six was $15! Brutal.
The plugs for the Carling switch are $1.50. The terminals are dirt cheap.

Everything I had worked just fine. The only problem is that it's going in for paint this fall, and I would be paying somebody probably a full day to put my nightmare back together. So I spent two days soldering terminals and pinning out connectors.

Turned out well. Everything can be broken down much easier. If a switch fails it will be much more serviceable as well.

I like soldering more than just crimping. If everything flows like it's supposed to, it's a solid connection.

And I bought a hand held label maker. That should help alleviate some confusion.

My gauge cluster had a strange lighting issue. Sent them in and Dakota Digital turned repaired and turned them around super quick. That's what spurred having the silver interior bits recoated. I should have them back in a day or two and have a functioning 40 again.

I'll have to show you the label maker I just got. It prints on heat shrink. I got it cause I'm doing the same thing lol.

Got my silver interior bits back from coating.

Silver is such a crap color to match. It never looks right. These look dark, but it was the color chip that matched up the best. I don't REALLY care because the only thing inside that isn't freshly coated is the new rearview mirror and that's a mile away.

They look good, and I'd wager in different light they look wrong the other way. 😆

New shift plaque is being made for the 5spd and the 2low tcase pattern as well.
