My New Rear Bumper

I bought the spindle and strut I didn't end up using from Luke. I sourced the latch, pins, and Delrin seperately. I made the rest of it myself.

I have heard about the wings on Luke's bumpers flexing into the body a bit. IMHO it is due to the added flex of having the rear crossmember cut out. The bumper re-creates the factory cross member but that still leaves the triangulated braces at each corner. I cut mine out too but I ran the reciever tube to a cross tube (both 0.250 wall) about 15" toward the front of the truck in hopes of boxing the rear of the frame to help make up for that.

I will let you know on producing them soon as well. I do want to get some time and wheeling in on mine to test the over all design and latch concept I did to make sure it works and lasts before I make one for someone else. I will get to put it to use in a week or so.

Wow, Mo! I can't think of anything to say that hasn't already been said better. Your bumper design and fab skills are truly magnificent! I'm really jealous...

I'm finally starting to add a little to my 80. I have an IPOR skid plate that I need to install and I'll be getting some Hanna sliders by the end of September. As was mentioned earlier, the Kaymar jack mount pretty much sucks. Can you think of a way to fab a mount like yours onto the Kaymar?

By the way, there's a SoCAl TLCA meeting this Sunday. Why don't you (and a bunch of other SoCal 80's) show up and show off? Every meeting lately has had at least a couple of 80's show up, though none are really built yet. It would be nice to see some well-built examples.

Take care,
JR

Thank you, I will definitely let you know soon. I need to take care of a couple of things first.

Did you read my little speal on the rear side marker lighs being unneccessary on the 80? Curious to know if I remeber the law correctly. IE will I get hassled?[/QUOTE]

I will look into it tonight...right now I am gonna get some sleep...worked all night and have to pick my daiughter up from school...but from memory you should be good to go..

That is totally sweet. I'd like to tell you that I feel your pain in taking so long to get it completed but it only took me about 4 or 5 weeks to do mine;) It is good to ultimately end up feeling satisfied and with a sense of accomplishment though, isn't it?

Okay to the best of my research there is no mention in the California Vehicle Code stating that you have to have those lights...Just headlights, brake lights parking lights, turn signals and licens plate lights...So I wouldn't worry..

Thanks Joe. PM sent re: the swing out. I can't make it this Sun I have a newborn and a birthday party my 3 year old is going to in the afternoon/early evening.

Yes it is. If the length of time taken to accomplish has anything to do with the satisfaction I am really really really satisfied. :D

Thank you very much for checking for me. Appreciated.

No worries on the checking...just keep me in the loop on possible building of more bumpers :):)

Will do. ;)

Ok, if your taking a survey of people that will buy one, I guess I will sign it.

Noted sir. I will post up after I do some figuring.

I am planning on making some more of these rear bumpers if any of you want one and need to know exactly who is seriously interested. I will be looking at pricing and will be willing to do a dual swing out model for those interested. Please let me know if you want one and what your timeframe is, ie do you need to wait a few months or whatever.

Thanks

i am in....want one....looking at the next few months though. maybe in time for surf and turf??? depending on price could be sooner. the price will really affect the time of purchase. thanks for going forward on the build. being local really helps cause shipping one of these really adds up.

It depends on price for me as well (im not working much lately stinkin economy) but It is a priority for me I think one swingout is good for me. Is there a good steping place to get up to the roof rack?

It depends on price for me as well

Me too, I sent you a PM but since you asked on this thread wanted to let you know too. And I'm interested in a dual swingout with a jerry can holder.

Looking forward to specs (if different), options and prices!
Im in for dual swing outs 35'' tire and 2-3 cans like Hanna's. But Im not in a rush - my goal is to have one at the end of 1/2009. Or earlier if Santa Claus comes by in Novermber. :grinpimp:

Mo,

I am very interested in a rear bumper, but you are not allowed to even consider making anything for anyone until you finish my pink front bumper!:flipoff2:

I have some ideas for custom touches to make mine stand out from the crowd a little too (other than pink:rolleyes:)
Have your people talk to my people.

I'm interested in a single swingout depending on price and availability. I need (want) one no later than mid-November.

Yes, I made the top of the bumper wide enough to be a good place to put your foot but still be tucked pretty close to the body. I think it is about 5".

Got that PM but thank you for posting here as well so I can have it all in one place.

Check your PM. ;)

Ok, I have you all down.

calfj60 - Sinle swingout? Few months $ dependant
hawkeye - Single swingout. Fairly soon, $ dependant
teejnut - dual swingout with jerry can holder
Alan - dual swingout with jerry can holder end of Jan ish or sooner.
Boyd - single swingout
Dan2722 - single swingout, mid November

I know $ is a serious factor so I am going to get that figured out ASAP. For those That want dual swingouts I will have to do a different latch mechanism but I will come up with something that gives the most clearance, ease of use and still works properly.

So how'd it do on it's maiden voyage?
got a sketch of what the dual swing out (Slomo V2.0?)would look like?
Would the side hoops go above the side markers?

I can't see how'd you could have the jack at the same angle unless it was on the side that always had to be closed first.

as stated earlier, i'm ready to pull the trigger after you do your figuring and such.
When I talked to Hanna about his bumpers, he told me that all the 80's came about 1/4 to 3/8" shifted to one side of the frame (from the factory) He told me he's seen them up to a 1/2" even.

Would you recommend using some flat head countersunk hex head screws for the mounting underneath so they wouldn't get dinged when slid across granite?

Also, what about a MTB mount? and a hole for a 2M antenna and one for a back up light?
I'd also like to use a clamp like IPOR's:
clamp.webp

I am good with the single swing out....don't go anywhere that would be a problem...I have a chunk of cash and a bunch of ebay stuff so could be sooner...will watch for pricing...:beer:

Thanks
