My New Rear Bumper

well i was gonna wait until saturday's run to express my interest, but I so many people are interested as well I think I need to secure an early (ish) release. I'm interested on a bumper only, no swingout of any kind ( depending on price and availability of course) And yeah it is a damn sweet bumper, not that you needed my opinion

Please count me in (again, depending on price)! I would be looking at one within the next couple of months (I am assuming it probably takes a month or two or more to fab up). Anyhow i got lost in the thread, are you going with the single or dual swing outs after all? Also, i could not see in the photos and don't remember if i read it or not, but is there a tow receiver ? Thanks again!

If i can have it my way, perhaps a single swing out with a tow receiver .....Thanks!

So how'd it do on it's maiden voyage?
got a sketch of what the dual swing out (Slomo V2.0?)would look like?
Would the side hoops go above the side markers?

I can't see how'd you could have the jack at the same angle unless it was on the side that always had to be closed first.

as stated earlier, i'm ready to pull the trigger after you do your figuring and such.
When I talked to Hanna about his bumpers, he told me that all the 80's came about 1/4 to 3/8" shifted to one side of the frame (from the factory) He told me he's seen them up to a 1/2" even.

Would you recommend using some flat head countersunk hex head screws for the mounting underneath so they wouldn't get dinged when slid across granite?

Also, what about a MTB mount? and a hole for a 2M antenna and one for a back up light?
I'd also like to use a clamp like IPOR's:

Haven't had the maiden voyage yet, that will be this Sat. ;)

No sketches of a dual yet, still finalizing the design. Allot will depend on the pricing I am able to work out and which components I use. The IPOR latches might be a good option. I will let you all know.

The side protection will definately come just above the side marker lights. Mine are blocked because of a swap on the measurement and me being impatient. ;p

Agree, having the jack at the same angle with a dual swingout will be problematic. One of the issues I am working on.

I hadn't heard about the shift to the side. Thanks for letting me know I will look into that.

The flat head bolts on the bottom would be nice but present three possible problems. 1 It could be more difficult to get them torqued as much and scuffs would make it difficult to get a hex into them. 2. The depth required to properly counter sink them could cause contact with the frame prior to fulling seating them. 3. Most difficult would be the fact that all 4 holes would all have to line up near perfectly to counter sink properly which would be very un-pracical or impossible with variations in the production of the frames and their life experiences (Accidents, wheeling abuse, etc.)

I could easily make up a MTB mount but that would have to be worked out in addition to the price of the bumper and would depend on the complexity of the design.

To keep the cost down I will have to make the latch consistent with all the dual swing outs at least if not for all the bumpers. If I don't go with the same latch as IPOR I could integrate it for you but again that would be extra.

I will be adding a tab or two to both designs for antennas or lights.

I like the idea of tabs for lights. I don't have a rack and don't plan on running a rack so I need a way to put some lights in the back. Running lockwood creek in the middle of the night was no fun without rear lights.

I am good with the single swing out....don't go anywhere that would be a problem...I have a chunk of cash and a bunch of ebay stuff so could be sooner...will watch for pricing...:beer:

Thanks

Updated, I am working on pricing, I swear. :D

Thank you for the complement. :) It would be no problem to make you one without a swingout. I will work the price out for that as well.

Have not finalized yet on one way or the other. I am trying to do both a single and a dual, should know soon.

Yes there is a tow reciever. I will put you down for a single swingout.

Thanks again to all of you for your interest. I am surprised that so many of you like it enough to want to buy one.:beer:

That hear ya. It has been awhile but I recall that being a little tricky at night without lights.

Hey, Mo. I dont need a the hardware to mount the jack, so I was woundering, could we workout some kind of ladder to access the roof rack?

ladder to the roof....Ah cr*p...I gotta have one of those now!

Well as most of you interested in one of my rear bumpers may have seen I went out and beat it mercilessly last weekend. The bumper did awesome. It took a few big shots from the side to the wings on both the tubing and the wing itself. It did flex in a little but no body damage from it and it kept the rocks out of the rear quarters.

The big hold up at the moment is the latch set up. Since I am trying something new I want to be sure it will work good long term. The last thing I want it to have you all end up with a swingout latch set up that sucks. I am using it alot and after a day of hard wheeling it seems to be ok but it did loosen a little. I am going to adjust the latch with the built in adjusters and see how it holds up.

I am working out a couple of other methods of building that I have to modify to make it produceable. To recreate more the way I built mine would take the price up way more than reasonable. I will have a price worked out by the end of the week, thanks for your patience.

Sorry for taking so long to get a price set for you guys. I have been working on getting the methodology set for making these bumpers in a production format and checking on the latch set up. I want to get as much time fussing with the latch as possible so I don't give any of you a piece of crap. I now know why Christo, Ken and Luke charge what they do for these. They are time consuming and a pain in the ass. :p

It will be $1,600 for a single swing out and $2,000 for a double swing out for the first run for my fellow SoCal 80s members. I willl most likely have to up that by $400 a piece on future runs but I wanted to keep the $ as low as possible for now. I will need a deposit of $500 from each of you who officially order one but I will not take that untill I get the pieces drawn up for the laser cutter that I had to one off on mine and am ready to start rounding up parts. Once the ball is rolling I will do everything in my power to keep on schedule but I will not cut corners or half ass anything. Since the process is not totally refined yet I may run into some delays but I will do them right as efficiently as possible.

Alan, sorry brother but I will be unable to re-design the bumper to a non frame cutting format. :frown: I think if you call Ken Hanna you will get a kick ass bumper just the way you want it. :grinpimp:

Please post up and let me know who is still interested and any exact time constraints.

Thanks

So when would you want the deposit and when after that do you estimate the bumper to be ready? Even a rough estimate I think would help everyone who is dependent on $.

Few questions regarding the dual swingout: will you be able to have the hi-lift similar to the single swingout and not sticking above the roof line? double or triple jerry can holder? how are you going to handle the latch for the dual?

Edit: i prefer a triple jerry can holder if possible since i have 1 water and 2 gas jerry cans. but it's not a big deal...

Awsome bumper, especially after seeing it in person and in action. If I could swing it, I'd ditch the Slee for your's. It's just not going to happen however. :frown:

...and if I didn't have a need to tow, I'd ditch the Kaymar in a heartbeat!

Well, that sounds very reasonable. I am ready to start. I want one swingout. I would like to figure out some kind of a ladder that is on the swingout next to the tire.

I am very intersted....just need to know when the deposit cut off is gonna be and what the expected turn around time is...Thanks for going forward on this...

I am with hawkeye and the need for some sort of ladder as i am looking at a roof rack also (God i would love to get my hands on a INTI rack!). Anyhow, will the recover points work with the high lift and or with Slee's Slee Jac-Kof Tool ? Lastly, what are the odds of allowing a group of us to take a look at it ? I think we are all local and since i haven't seen it in person, would love an opportunity to check it out.

I would also be interested in a single swing-out if J. Demello does not have time to fab one up for me.

A very fair question but I am not sure when I will be ready to collect a deposit. I am hoping to be at that point in a few weeks. The whole point of waiting to collect a deposit is to not take your money and keep you waiting forever but to collect it when I am ready to start acutal work on them not while I am working out the last few details to make them production ready. I am shooting for 8 weeks of build time.

I will keep the Hi-Lift below the roof line the best I can on a dual swing out but the fact that the swingouts will be much shorter will make it difficult for the 60" but I should be able to with the 48". As far as the latch I will most likely latch them together like the 4x4 Labs bumper that Luke does. The fact that the bumper angles in on the rear facing plane makes it very difficult to do them any other way and keep the latch out of harms way.

Making the jerry can holder fit 3 vs 2 is not a big deal.

Thanks Reid, I take that as a complement.

You could tow with it no problem. Especially a 3500 lb trailer full of Boy Scout supplies. ;)

I can make a ladder for you but I would have to charge extra for it. I will work on a design and let you know exactly how much.
