This FJ40 is my 70th car and the learning curve for this thing is unlike anything I've ever owned. There is a part behind the center link that I removed, cleaned/de-rusted, panted, and re-installed when I rebuilt the center link five years ago. I've always thought that the part was a poor design and introduced too much flex in the steering gear. Last weekend I thought I'd attempt to reinforce it somehow to tighten up the steering. While researching I noticed that it was also cracked, so I sought a replacement. The part doesn't exist as someone evidently made it. I can't figure out why someone would have done that. I removed it and re-installed the center link and all is as solid as can be. Can someone tell me what this thing is and/or why someone put it there?

That's some sketchy sh*t right there. I guarantee there was some flex built into that hack. Evidently someone lifted the vehicle and felt they needed to lower center link instead of adjusting the relay rod to center the steering wheel.

70th car? Have you discussed this with a counselor?
HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!! The most I've owned at once was nine. I've had serious air-cooled VW and Subaru addictions. Still have a '63 Bug and an '83 GL 4WD wagon that I lifted 4" & re-powered w/OHC EFI turbo engine from an '89. Gets better mileage than it did with the 73HP carb'd stocker.
