This FJ40 is my 70th car and the learning curve for this thing is unlike anything I've ever owned. There is a part behind the center link that I removed, cleaned/de-rusted, panted, and re-installed when I rebuilt the center link five years ago. I've always thought that the part was a poor design and introduced too much flex in the steering gear. Last weekend I thought I'd attempt to reinforce it somehow to tighten up the steering. While researching I noticed that it was also cracked, so I sought a replacement. The part doesn't exist as someone evidently made it. I can't figure out why someone would have done that. I removed it and re-installed the center link and all is as solid as can be. Can someone tell me what this thing is and/or why someone put it there?
