I’ve been eyeballing those as well. Super interesting. Wish they didn’t have those super long overload leafs… They look like a good anchor for rocks or mud.
My understanding is that the springs for 40s do not have those.

So I visited the website and not fully viewed the video. That may be the clarifications I need. The site has several different FJ40 models and some show that larger bottom spring and some do not.. looks like the price is $433.00 per spring Australian….my conversion to US funds is around $500,000.00 with shipping? …. I can only imagine with the weight of a spring. Although, Alberta Canada is a little closer

Edit: watched both videos…. I am anxious to try these

Agreed. Hard to tell for sure from what’s out there to look at. That would make them way more appealing if they didn’t have that. Perhaps it’s just a 43/45 thing for the added weight.

I think Valley Hybrids is a dealer for TT products.

AUD to USD 1:.68 so 433 AU = 294 US - then yeah shipping - maybe only 100K - George might have a better rate?

Now you’re talking…. Their site shows no US dealers

40 Channel did say theses springs are a lot lighter to carry

Changed oil yesterday. The exhaust bracket bolt was MIA. So put new one in.

Stirred it up with the suspension debate - might as well do it with what oil...

Russ @solomrus and I looked, drove, and discussed the frame etc. Yellr is out for a while from anything other than going to Costco or other pavement only jaunts. There is a stress crack that follows the top of the fixed pin bracket that is riveted on in the rear.

I have a few options. Goal is to have it resolved in time for SAS if I make the registration whenever it is announced (sometime in 2025).

  • Find a 79+ frame and clean that all up and move everything over - problem is slippery slope for me - how far to restore the rust while apart that much. My wallet hurts thinking about it, yet would be all done.
  • Find a section of frame and cut in and reinforce -
  • Pop out the frame rivets for fixed pin - and repair and reinforce and re-attach.
At least I can drive some - plan is to see what pops up and get some feelers out and over winter see what I can start in on (not driving when salt on the road anyway).

Might be heading out with Erik @Plains Cruiser tonight for some fun. And we got our tickets for the Cookie and Beer pairing event right after Labor Day at a brewery in Lincoln too!

Another option to add for your frame dilemma is Aqualu. They make new 79+ frames. Not cheap but depending on what you find for used frames and how much labor/clean up they need may not be that big of a stretch. Never fun to deal with a problem of that magnitude but glad to hear you’re planning to get it resolved quickly one way or another!

A night of Landcruisering was had. Made me realize crispy golden light was the only thing missing from our Colorado cruises - next year we'll have to do a sunset drive or two.

Multiple birds with one stone:

Now it'll ride nicely, articulate, and it comes with built ford 9" axles.

If I were to do it again, that's the route I'd go. Throw an Aqualu body on it and call it done. Instead of molesting a classic car.

Noisy suspension? Grease it. Done. Last year I greased mine middle of the week. Meant to this year as it needed it, but failed from distractions. Chasing parts, driving around, and trails, I put almost 700 miles on before heading home. Normal road use, it's gets greased every other oil change, which is about 6000 miles. Rough roads and articulation squishes the grease out pronto.

I've got Old Man Emu heavy front and rear. I need to add another leaf. I'm sagging a bit with the back full of crap, and more so with the trailer. But, I'm also 5k pounds at war weight.
Another idea was doing an air shock to plump up the back. If I go that route, I might actually pull a leaf.

Your frame failure in that location is not uncommon. I'm sure you can find mulitple threads on this issue. In the past some vendors have offered reinforcements for the spring hangers to strengthen the hanger. Other folks have designed their own reinforcements. The problem is the spring hanger is offset from the frame and puts stress in that location. I've witnessed repairs as simple as having a competent welding shop clean and weld the crack, to my hack of scabbing the frame with angle iron and reinforcing the hangers. I would get it repaired b4 driving it much. The spring is no longer attached to the vehicle.

My vote, for whatever it is worth: Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Fix the minimal damage to the frame at the spring perch and possibly rinforce the opposite side for piece of mind. Much easier on the pocket book, your time and avoids the rather large rabbit hole....In the end, you vehicle will be just as solid as when it rolled off the assembly line.

Thanks!! - read and bookmarked that link - very informative and like what was done.

Cheers

Oh - @RodrigzCrzr et al, - some of my noise is the military wrap bumping the frame.

Was wondering the same thing @sogncab about lubrication - metal on metal will make noise. To be clear, I am being picky after shelling out that amount. I also wonder since going for a softer ride, it is going to absorb the bumps more often, thus flex more frequently - creating more noise. It isn't bad, just noticeable like turning into the driveway.

Great thread. A good food for thought.
I have the same vintage as Yellr and will be seriously considering a preventative fix like this on my girl’s downstairs.

Thanks for sharing @pb4ugo
I’ll search for other threads and post them here but if you think of any could you as well?

@Green Bean when Bryan started talking about new frames I was slightly concerned. If you know Bryan, this would end up the new largest cave system in North America.

wow, the rear hangers are more common to failure than one would guess. Makes sense with offset to the frame compared to front hangers... the more you know...

OK here are some links I am finding not redundant to the one above - thanks to @pb4ugo for the nudge...

From what I am learning sometime after 1980 - Toyota reinforced the hangers similar to what users are developing and installing. (I think that was from the first frame post from @pb4ugo that had an image of stock frame from 1982 reinforced)

this is an interesting approach from one of the threads you posted but I like the gusset made of square tube idea @65swb45 mentioned somewhere.
