Are you still running the factory '98 front diff?

Are you still running the factory '98 front diff?

:frown: I am. I’ve always tried to drive somewhat carefully and certainly no hopping, but I do sometimes get on the throttle a little.

I do really want to upgrade to a locker and re-gear but it’s just such a big chunk of money all at once. I keep doing other less expensive mods.

I totally understand. That’s awesome to hear though, because to read the forum you’d think the front diff would fly apart the moment you hit the CDL.

In an effort to break things, I may try fitting this.

I have no idea where it came from. At least that's what I'll tell my wife...

Heard that. One time when I was out of town for work some dude in a brown panel truck dropped off four brand new 37s in my front yard. My wife and I were so confused.

Exactly! “Hmm, well, since they are here now, I might as well mount them up :meh:

Haha nuts. You gotta SAS this thing man!

Well, that would certainly be the smart thing to do, and I may have to SAS to run 40's but I'm interested in the possibility that maybe it can be done on IFS. I like seeing things like Big Mike's (Marlin Crawler) Tacoma. Big tires without massive lift. And I love seeing the progress the 80 has taken over many years as larger tires become less insane even with a smaller lift. I know taking this path isn't logical on this platform but I have been immensely happy with how mine has turned out for how I use it, how often I wheel it and where we go. I really wish I could share how it drives with everyone. Maybe I am just completely used to crappy handing, but I feel like it is still very stable and easy to drive. (Looking forward to a higher rear panhard mount, whenever that becomes available. I can feel that sideways movement o_O @Delta VS)

I have a plan for the back of the truck, and I'm scheduled for some shop time Friday to play around with the idea a little more. I have some rust that will be cut out and I will share what I do. It won't be anything new. I'm just following an idea I've seen in the 80 section a few times.

The front end will be the make or break. No pun intended. It may be too much work and I have to give up on the whole idea or it may just have to sit and stew for a while. I have no interest in a SAS at this time. And the truck can't be down for much time at all either since I daily it for work. Plus there are always other things (like front locker and gearing) that will go hand in hand with making this work properly.

Sounds great dude, I'm excited to see the outcome!

How many times do we have to relive this... 35 in tires on 100 series.
@sleeoffroad "Your crazy"
IFS 37-40" meats? Cut, hack, mall cruiser bodylift, continue to mash, blown parts, realize limits after 34", SAS, No longer daily.

I love that this is your daily. Thanks for pushing the limits for us

I was curious where these would come in at with a 40” tire…

116.8lbs isn’t bad at all :hillbilly:

Installed the Metal Tech rear UCA’s. I purchased them some time ago but they just arrived earlier this month. They seem like very high quality parts. I’m not sure what the bracket that hangs down from the driver’s side arm is supposed to support.

Slight contrast of the nice new shiny part attached to my rust bucket :frown:

Also had a chance to get some initial test fitting done yesterday.

We were all surprised by how large the rear fender openings were and how well this tire fit to begin with. I thought I would need to move the rear axle back to stay out of the rear door but the tire seems to be placed about where we want it. The body rust I have is exactly where the tire interferes first. So the bottom edge behind the tire will be cut out permanently. Fuel filler appears to be flexible enough to move out of the way.

The front was even more surprising. Although the tire wasn’t tucking as easily with just the forklift it gave us a good idea of how it may work. Again, I thought for sure I would have to move virtually everything forward in order to accommodate this but it appears I may be able to cut a little more from the back edge and possibly the additional 1” body lift just at the front will allow this to happen!

It will be hard to leave this alone for a while and save up to regear and lock the front axle. All I want to do is order up the other tires and keep moving on this but it is now at the point that I have to be patient and do other things first. I will be doing the rear fender clearance next to get rid of the rust and maybe the rear bumper after that.

I’m trying to get to the Black Hills to wheel this summer also so we’ll see how far I can get before that trip.

At some point in time I had the same fabricator make an interior spare tire carrier since I wasn't ready for a rear bumper with tire carrier yet. This is what he came up with...View attachment 1602986

From this last photo, you can clearly see I desperately need to add some additional protection underneath the bumper and down to the dif. I promise I'll get around to that eventually. Oh, and an observant person will notice that the OEM washer bottle reservoir is missing since it fits behind the factory bumper on the drivers side. When I designed this, I noticed the connections/tubes were plenty long to reach somewhere else in the engine compartment, so I figured I'd find another smaller reservoir to mount somewhere else. Well, I don't know what the proper way is to find another one that uses the same Toyota connections without physically taking other ones apart at maybe a junk yard and examining them, so I am still without a washer fluid bottle. If someone has a good solution for this, I am all ears.

Just came across the build from the Photos thread, and that spare mount is something I genuinely need but didn't know was possible, so I thank you for being a trailblazer and getting it fabbed. Might need to be my first true fabrication project. I was just gonna ratchet strap the thing down to something in the cargo space but this is WAY safer.

Thanks man!

Since I had this one made I have also found speedstraps.com and would probably have rather used one of their straps instead of the U.S. Cargo ones I bought. Speedstraps also have some cool three point straps that hold across the side of a spare tire.

I can fit the 40 inside also but it won’t go in that mount anymore so I may try to come up with something that provides attachment off the grab handle at the top and attachment points for two of the three point strap at the bottom. Obviously it needs to be secure or it could become a massive danger in an accident.

If you need any additional photos of the existing mount to mimic, just message me.

So...how is this coming along?
