Most expensive 60 series cupholder upgrade: =BILL=

Well, first of all, Hello! And I know this isn't the 60 series section.

I figured Id post some pics of the start of my 60 series upgrade. To save a few thousand words, heres a couple posts of some pics of where things were and are headed...

First you finder a upholder....

This one came with the body and frame of an 89 hilux. Although it looks pretty, technically it was a heartless b*tch. As the hilux did not come with drivetrain, just axles until I return them to the seller.

Next, to install the upholder remove the front inner fenders, doors, and then cut off the firewall at the a pillars and across the floor to get better access...

Third the "donor"

Now... simply remove the axles, turbo'd 3B/H55f/splitcase. I will need them later.

Then, put an add on kijiji for a rusted holy frame and remanats of a 60 series for your local "steel hawk" to pickup.

Now, some pics of the formerly SOA modd'd axles with all the brackets and brake lines off. :steer:

lets see, what pics next...

here's a dirty 3BT,

some leaf springs, any guesses what I got here? :hhmm:

and the easiest way ive managed to remove old spring bushings with pins frozen in place:

3/4" holesaw each side of the rubber bushing, add a little WD40 so there isn't too much friction on the rubber, then use the holesaw to cut the bushing on two sides and it falls out. Took me about 2 minutes each.

And, more pictures...

Engine mounts gone, still have lots to remove in the engine compartment. I have a LHD dash and parts to swap out the RHD parts with, so the brake booster, steering and clutch will be relocated.

BTW, the owner of the mini truck axles (5.29's) and leaf springs lives in calgary and is looking to sell them, PM me if interested and I can forward you his contact info.

I wonder what a 4 door hilux would look like with 60 series axles and 39.5" IROK bias tires under it. This is where I left off tonight. :wrench:

And finally, the front parabolic leafs I pulled off my the front of my 60 are for sale as well, PM me if interested.

Mak's gonna love this thread since he's got a set of 60 axles himself. :D

That last pic gives a nice idea of what's in store. :steer:

Ya, I think it'll look ok. Thanks for the help the other week BTW! Maybe Ill see you and Ratpukus over again for some more cheap labour!

Im gonna try and get most of the grinding done this evening so the shop isnt so loud/smelly when people come by.

Alright, got a question:

The rubber bushings for my motor mounts are pooched. I could probably source some replacement stock bushings, but since they likely wont fit due to narrower frame rails, whats a decent aftermarket or alternative source?

Also, whats the consensus on using shackle bolts/bushings to do the job?

Gonna try and get the front axle out this evening, and back to its owner.

Threads like this make me hate California and the EPA...... I am soooo jealous. I want a 4 door hilux very much and to have a diesel would just be icing on the cake. I am definitely subscribed to this one.

some more.

Wasnt feeling motivated tonight, luckily there was more work required in the house then out so I snuck outside when the better half wasnt looking.

Had to build a lift kit for the jack stand out of old lumber scrap, still need to make one more.

2nd pic, 60 series vs. mini, for perspective.

And third, axle under the front.

I still have heaps of work to do, alot of fabrication of leaf spring brackets and engine mounts. But its nice to have the axles out of the way to clear space in the other bay, and as a bit of a precaution, the truck can only fall about 4" and the wheels should support it.

Tomorrow wont be too much done, gotta go for a drive to drop off the front axle at Kyles place, and build another wooden block.

Oh, I'm sure there's a will and a way for us in Cali, but likely it involves an engine and body swap with a 4Runner frame.

I'd like a DC Hilux myself. :D

It can be done.
Swap a diesel into any pre-1998 truck, and you'll be golden after a visit to the smog ref.

Exactly. If my truck had been a longbed extra cab truck to start with, I would have brought in the double cab to finish off the Hilux-ation of the truck. ;)

That's really cool. 3B, turbo, Double Cab hilux..... Love it!

Thanks for compliments guys.

I enjoy the feedback, its great motivation for when life is already quite busy.

The axles already have 4.88's, longfields in the front, poly's in the rear.

I had a serious death wobble before I tore it apart, my plan is to upgrade to six shooters, and I will need to do a cut and turn at some point. If Im going to do all that then the axle is pretty much stripped at that point, so I might as well take it somewhere for sandblasting and PC. Though that will be well after the leaf mounts and stuff is burnt on, so way down the road...

I'm in TN, so passing smog probably wouldn't take too much work especially away from nashville, I was more eluding to the fact that cali emissions and the EPA are the reason why the US market never saw a diesel past 83/84.

Back to the work at hand, this is going to a killer truck when ur finished. How much wider is the track with the 60 axles going to be? Doesn't look too much wider. What packs are you building your springs out of?

The track is about a foot wider than stock, but im running wheel spacers at present so I can lessen that. Because the tires are so wide (15" from sidewall to sidewall) I dont know if I will remove the spacers though, as I may have rubbing issues against the frame in the back.

Its getting chevy 63's in the rear and 60 series rear leafs up front. (in a picture earlier up) Im gonna start building perches from some square tube on the weekend. The plan is to build the perches such that I can use bolts instead of U bolts, by using overwidth perches with a rail on with side to help keep the leafs in place. And then use larger oversized bolts in comparison to the U bolt diameter. Making it cheap and easy to add or swap leaf springs if needed for final spring rate or ride height.

Key word here is "truck", as in "as originally titled". Thus excluding any "passenger vehicle", aka: 4Runner or CrewCab b/c California interprets them as "passenger vehicles" not "commercial vehicles". (1 versus 2 alpha's on the license plate).

/END O/T.
~Sorry about the off-topic, but it at least relates to the thread. :D
