I'm in TN, so passing smog probably wouldn't take too much work especially away from nashville, I was more eluding to the fact that cali emissions and the EPA are the reason why the US market never saw a diesel past 83/84.

Actually, Government Motors (GM) is largely to blame for Diesel's near extinction circa 1980.
Look into Give us Money's old Oldmobile and Caddy Diesel experiments, when the nation's largest-selling producer of motors leaves blood in the water... the sharks come.

Well, I haven't got too much done on the hilux for some reason.

Ive been a little distracted with my 80. I decided to build a new bumper and sell the one that came with the truck, so Ive used my time to pick up some steel for new spring perches for the hilux, and for the bumper on the 80.

Also Jan came by the other day, he's got a PZJ77 thats been turbo'ed and he wanted a bit more boost out of it, so I wired the wastegate shut. He's getting at most 9-10 lbs. of boost, but his EGT's are running fairly low (1000 degrees about max).

I did manage to pull the fuel tank and cut the bracket off on the hilux. The 60 series axles must be the opposite drop as the driveshaft would interfere with the tank, so it'll get moved to the opposite side.

And some pics:

Its nice having airbags sometimes. To get the centre section of bumper to the right location, just air up or down the bags till it looks about right, then level it and weld it in. Im modelling the 80's bumper after another members.

cool build! I've got a similar build going on right now as well. '88Runner with 60 axles, 3B turbo etc... I had to retro-fit the x-member for the drive shafts, new shock mount, same issues with the fuel tank etc... keep the pics coming.

Thanks man!

Got a little done this eve on the 80 bumper. Im going to River Shiver: RMLCA - Rocky Mountain Land Cruiser 4x4 Association next weekend, so Im trying to get the front bumper done ASAP, as well as a mount for my CB antenna. Once this is out of the way its back at the BILL with more pics.

Well, it looks like the hilux has been in an accident.

I pulled the sky manufacturing high steer arms off and sold them so the knuckles are on tilt. I guess I gotta sell those bumpers to fund some 6 shooters.

Also got a bit more work done on the 80's bumper. I hope to finish it tomorrow, but I also gotta have a look at the clutch hydraulics as they almost don't work whatsoever. The 80 is pretty much undrivable at the moment.

Couple more pics of bumper stuff too.

OK, I know Im sidetracking, but the 80 is out of the way for a while.

Got the bumper done and managed to get the clutch hydraulics working at least temporarily, and get the 8274 working once again, also finally got an antenna mount built o n the rear.

And Im off to clean up a very very messy garage.

Hopefully I can start to get the engine lined up before the weekend.

Well, Bill has been on the back burner for a while.

But I started on the rear perches, got the fuel tank relocated and re-plumbed, and ordered leaf bushings.

This is kinda the plan for what I'd like to do for a swingout...

Well, here's an update.

I basically got very little done on the truck since the last post, but Ive got a few pictures.

The upgraded shackle and leaf bolts (bronze coloured ones), with stock worn out 60 series and an aftermarket 40 series for comparison.

Also I had the washer with 6 holes made, it will be tacked to all the leaf bushing bolts and the leaf spring bolts which will replace the U bolts.

More pictures in a minute. :meh:

I got the radiator cleaned up, removed some metal off the bottom in order to fit it low enough to get the hood on. I also had to notch the frame for it to drop low enough.

The sheetmetal on the front of the hilux is not removable to get access to put the motor in, so I made some of it removable by cutting it and welding some small square tube along it, then drilling and tapping it so its modular.

Im also changing my plans for the turbo. Im gonna put two in it.

This is a TD04 (mitsubishi turbo off a WRX) also the wastegate to bypass the smaller turbo, and a different exhaust housing for my merkur turbo.

Ive got the forward facing rear leaf mounts burnt on the frame, Ill be working on the rears this weekend.

This is still one that I want to see finished. Are the 4 door hilux's pretty popular up in Canada?

I have been thinking more lately about trying to get one imported into the states to build into a DD.

4 Door short bed with a Lexus 4.0 V8 might be a sweet ride.

If I could get one north of the border I might start researching it more, bringing one from over seas is not going to be doable right now, but a gasser from up north might be doable.

Sorry for the hijack, back to your build, again one of my favorites and very glad to see that it is still moving forward, slowly, but still moving.

Thanks, I think you could probably get one, I believe it is a 25 year import law for you, and mine is an 89, so it would be the body style before, or you'd have to put it on a US frame. They came with a 2LT or 3L motors in stock form.

There should be a little progress on the hilux for a while. A new fence, kitchen table, house painting, and stuff on my DD (rear end, starter, clutch, transmission leaks, broken birfield, bumper powder coated etc. etc) and a bunch of other stuff became higher priority. The hilux will get attention for a little while unless I break my 80 again.

Cool. Just out of curiosity what is the wheelbase on the 4 door. I may have to start researching possibly buying a body and bed and using a US extended cab frame.

A 4 door hilux is my dream truck, which is why this build is so interesting to me.

I dont know off the top of my head, this one dont have the stock mounts leafs or axles, I can get you a measurement of what approximately it will end at but I dont know what it was.

Im almost willing to bet that it would be close enough to a 60 series that you may be able to swap the body over though.

I really like this build. please bring it out to kelowna and we can go wheeling together

Sounds fun, Id like to get out to whipsaw next year late in the summer. The local toyota club gets out there around that time so I may join them as they do a yearly run.

Got a little work done on the weekend, got the shackles started, got most of the bolts welded to the lock washers, and Jim BTW was nice enough to lathe down the tube I purchased to fit the shackle bushings. :)

Jims bushing sleeve's he made last night. He put in lots of effort to get them perfect, probably the best most precision part that'll be going on the truck!

A little more done this evening. The shackles are gonna look different with the shackle bolts in them.

You can see how Ive made the rear perches, since I wont be using U bolts Ive added the extra rib in the center to take the weight and more metal to attach it to the axle.

I burnt together the other shackle yesterday and cleaned up one of the perches a bit, but Im finding the paint Im using for the shackles (aersol can tremclad gloss black) to be a bit, well, poor quality.

Any body got some reccomendations for a good aersol paint, or even brush on rust paint that I can get at a Lowe's or Home depot, that I can paint on bare steel and will hold up better?

I sprayed some WD-40 on some of the painted metal and it pretty much dissolved the silver tremclad.

Edit: Im going to try zero rust (ZR) for the rest of the parts on the truck.
